Phil runs a one person shop so service is personalized; there isn't any go-between service manager and his communication skills are tremendous so we are never surprised by the bill and feel like we know the car a little better each time we take it in. Over a number of years Phil has fixed a Porsche, Chevy Van, Mazda Pickup, Mercedes, and Saturn for us, all with good outcomes. He is the most thoughtful and trustworthy mechanic we know of in the area. At one time he gave a discount on the markup repair shops add to part prices. We haven't thought to ask recently and he may still do this. Repairs generally cost less due to a lower hourly rate (he has no overhead) and because he works to find less expensive solutions for older cars. No one is perfect and you shouldn't expect miracles, but for us Phil is the go-to place for less expensive repairs. Phil loves cars and sometimes races them. Since Phil is willing to talk with you analytically about your car it is easy to misunderstand his business and expect him to stop and chat about a car problem when he is working on someone else's car. We have found there are times in the middle of a repair he can't do this since he is focusing on another customer and wants to have the car ready when promised. In dozens of shops in several states we've learned that some problems can be hard to diagnose even for the best mechanics. Phil is good at these hard problems. We appreciate how analytical Phil is and how he walks us through the diagnosis process. He is extremely cost conscious and works to keep repair costs down. Here are some specific repairs to give an idea why our review is so positive: 1) Found a bad connection to the fuel injectors in a Chevy van. This infrequent intermittent problem had been impossible to detect during two cross country trips. Five shops had been unable to find the problem but Phil did. 2) Resolved a longstanding issue by replacing all the softening brake lines in a Mercedes after a previous mechanic had run up three large bills when small bits from the lines broke off to cause problems. 3) Saved us $200 by recommending/acquiring a used Saturn electronic control part, knowing the car did not have many miles remaining.

I've been taking my cars to Phil for almost eight years; ever since I got fed up with inflated service fees typical of dealerships and some other local shops. I could easily and willingly lay down pages of praise. He is conscientious, friendly, honest, flexible, frugal, skilled, fully trained/certified, and musical (he plays a guitar during lunch). Depending on the issue, the car, and the owner, Phil will work to fashion the most appropriate and balanced solution; he's not just a mindless grease monkey. I trust my cars with Phil, I trust Phil, and I wouldn't hesitate for an instant to give a hearty recommendation. A bit more... I think the most endearing thing about Phil ... the most memorable ... is the fact that if he bumps into an odd nit while he is engaged with a car, he'll often just go ahead and fix it; like a body-panel clip that's come unattached, or a button that's sticky, or a door that squeaks. One final note - he's a talker - even Achilles had his heel. Don't expect to get in and out in 5 minutes.

Been taking my 2000 Saturn SL to Phil for over 5 years, and I'm amazed it's still running with 150K+ miles on it.

Honest, trustworthy, reliable. I have used Phil for a number of fixes in the past, he is good at recommending options for the repair and keeping you in the loop. Very good.

We have brought my wifes 2002 Jetta wagon to Phil at Valley Autoworks for a few issues small and large over the last year or so. Phil knows Im a driveway mechanic and on several of the smaller problems he gave me great advice on how to fix the issues myself and even helped me get the right parts. On a large job that was a bit over my head he listened to me as I had a pretty good idea what was wrong and he used his expertise to fix the engine (timing problem). Our car runs very good now (made wife very happy). Phil is just a very nice guy - very easy to talk with (and if he's not busy you might hear him play his guitar!). He was actually recommended to us by another very well respected auto repair shop in Acton that just doesnt do that kind of work on VWs. I know Phil specializes in foriegn cars like VW, Audi, BMW, etc but it is my guess he could fix any car. If you have a car issue and can get you car to Boxborough take it to Phil at Valley Autoworks. 2000 Passat in excellent condition. Phil has always been responsive to my issues, trusts my descriptions of symptoms and is skilled at diagnosing and repairing the problem. Has always been great about responding on short notice and giving advice on care and maintenance. At 193000 miles and 16 years I know the car will not last forever but will depend on Valley Autoworks as long as I own it. He really knows VWs.
