You definitely it's time to sell your car, when your mechanic emphaticaly tells you: "GET RID OF IT!!!!!"

He told me over the phone that I didn't need one of the repairs the Toyota dealer had tried to sell me and gave me an inexpensive alternative. He has the most interesting things in his waiting room that I've ever encountered, including a tiny computer game and "Old News" newspaper, which included stories about how a slave couple escaped, about Dolly Madison and the White House (including how it was burned down), about a race between one of the first steam locomotives and a horse- pulled "train," and about the Chicago fire, all in first- person, true, narratives. I wished he had taken longer with my car so I could finish playing with all the toys.

They have worked on many cars in my family, and we compare stories on what they say is wrong and how much is the repair. I recommend them highly as they will tell you what's up and put repairs in perspective. If the car is really old or you just don't want to spend money, they will tell you you might want to pass on the repair and what might happen if you put off the repair, plus they will tell you if the car is unsafe. I am a shade tree mechanic and verify what the problems are before I have the car brought to them (I don't always have the time or tools to do the repairs). They have never steered us wrong.
