This is a great shop. Having to find a new mechanic was one of the things I lamented when I found out we were moving (of course I am back here to find a new shop out here in CA). I always felt like I was treated well and respectfully. They always explained everything to me and would even tell me what repairs could wait. I took my Mazda MPV here as well as my our Protege before we got rid of it and my husband's Lexus ES. One time, I had a slow leak on one of my tires and called to see about getting a new wheel (expensive alloy). The man I spoke to told me that they had a very high success rate with just machining the old wheel and that it was only $20 or so (as opposed to a few hundred for a new wheel and installation). That saved me a lot of money. When I got my brakes done, they said the rear pads didn't need to be replaced for a while and that saved me money, too. Those are just two examples of the kind of shop this is.

I've taken my two cars--a 97 Honda Civic manual trans and a 96 Subaru Legacy Wagon automatic trans--there for years now, based on a recommendation of a friend who is also a long-time satisfied customer. I get all my maintenance service done as well as any repairs the cars have needed, esp. as the years and milage have hit the high numbers. They just do a really good, efficient, honest job and whenever there has been a problem (rarely, and even then I can't think of when it was their direct fault), they have been great about addressing it directly and making sure they corrected it at no additional cost to me, and with as little inconvenience to me as is possible. They work on EVERYTHING--a huge garage that can hold something like 14 vehicles at a time. And, they can do everything from tiny Mini Cooper-esque cars to school buses! If I'm not mistaken, they even work on vehicles for several of the local municipality branches: the police dept, the school district, etc. And, they are also a group of friendly, polite, and energetic people. Their attitudes and demeanors make them easy to deal with, as well. The last thing I need when my car is in trouble is a shop/staff that makes me feel even more hassled, so I really value their effort to keep things as positive and can-do as possible.

My daughter, living in the Chicago area, called me in Florida saying her 2006 CRV had broken down at 7:00AM in a new neighborhood and needed to know what to do. I logged on to Car Talk and found Naper Auto Works with great reviews and called her back with their phone number. These guys were GREAT! They towed her car, fixed the car in a very timely manner, price was very fair, and treated a female by herself with such professionalism. GREAT JOB, Naper Auto Works and CAR TALK!!

I ended up having my car towed here as a result of my car not being able to start, and after calling a couple places on President's Day, I talked to Jim on the phone and he was able to fit me in. It was exceptionally close to where I broke down, and after a timely tow of probably less than 15 minutes (by their own tow truck),the car was on the lot. Even though Jim initially told me on the phone that they would be able to look at it in the afternoon, he had it checked out within the hour. After letting me know there was no compression in the vehicle, most likely as a result of a broken timing chain, he was very upfront about the issue. Rather than trying to talk me into an expensive repair,he told me that the best case scenario was just the chain, but that there could be valve damage, and with the age and mileage of the vehicle (175,000+ miles), it may not be worth it. I appreciated that he didn't trying to get the initial repair, only to then be able to get me for more down the road. Deciding to say goodbye to the vehicle, he even brokered a deal to sell the car and didn't charge me for the couple days the vehicle sat on his lot. Jim even offered great advice about buying a new car, what to look for and how to make sure I'm getting the best deal. I know that when I get my next vehicle that this will be the place I get maintenance done. Also, they have been Angie's List winners, which is a pretty big deal. In the end, I'm sad to see my car go, but very satisfied with the quality and friendliness of the service at Naper Auto Works.

First of all, this is a great way to find a good mechanic! I have used Mechanics Files in 3 cities now, and been very happy with the garages I have found through it. Naper Auto Works is a class act. I agree with everything the other reviewers have said. I especially appreciate the way they try to find the least expensive fix, and never do more than is absolutely needed. Their diagnostic skills are excellent, and I have never had to bring back my car for the same problem twice. They make car maintenance day relatively painless by dropping you at work, and picking you up in the evening to bring you back to the shop. Bill and Jim are always very pleasant to deal with, as are all the others you come across at the shop. I cant say enough good things about this place. I used to go to Becker Auto Works, which is another good shop in the area, but it seems to be harder to get an appointment there, and they have no drop-off service. Naper Auto will be my mechanic as long as I live in this neighborhood.

had a car that needed a starter. replaced the starter but when I picked it up it seems they put a bad starter in it. seems they didn't test drive/start it. got the car to my regular mech and he replaced the rebuilt starter. returned the bad starter to them, asked to see the 2nd repair bill, they refunded the cost of the starter. very expensive shop, my mech charged me way less then these guys charged. then my mech. told me they bad mouthed me!!!! will never go back.
