Although they are not convenient to me, I use them when I know that the dealer ship is unwilling or unable to do the work I require. At least for SAABs, they are aware of common problems and seem to have good work arounds to expensive replacements.

I have had two repairs done on a ten year old Volvo, the first time they solved a steering problem for half the price of what either the dealer or a "suspension/tire" shop estimated. The second, more recent, experience was a rough idle problem--they did extensive troubleshooting with "known good" parts to determine the real problem. They were able to do this because, as a Volvo specialist, they had the parts on hand to try. Many other shops would have ended up replacing a set of parts and charging me for all of them. They only charged me for diagnostic time and the one part that was bad. I have also had them do competent work on a newer, but past factory warranty, Mazda.
