There isn't anything we don't like about Sam and his shop. We agree strongly with all of the questions you ask except the part that he is fair about fixing his own screw-ups-- we've never found him to screw anything up. Sam's attitude is like his work. Very strong voice, as polite and polished as anyone and explains everything up front. Cheerful and almost always a soccer game on TV in his lobby. Sam does all kinds of European and Japanese cars--we've sent friends there and have never heard of anything less than positive. This world needs more men like Sam.

EUROPEAN & JAPANESE AUTO SERVICE is located at 9022 OGDEN AVENUE, BROOKFIELD, IL. I brought my Nissan Quest to Sam's based on a recommendation I read in this web site. My search for a mechanic was spawned by my less than satisfactory experience with dealer shops. Sam runs a clean shop, everything's very organized and well maintained. When I arrived I brought a printout of this column and showed it to him. He was very proud -- and he should be, he runs a great shop. You can tell this guy cares about his business and his customers. When I dropped my car off for repairs I actually felt confident that he was going to do me right -- and he did. You couldn't ask for a nicer guy to work on your car. Great job Sam.

Unlike a dealership, Sam takes personal charge of a car. There's no explaining a problem to an administrative person, who relays the information to a service manager who intern tries to explain your problem to a mechanic. At Sam's place, Sam hears the problem, understands what's wrong, and sees to it that the problem is taken care of. No one beats Sam's service!

Had a problem with my '96 Camry. It would die and stall and have low rpm intermittently, worse with the a/c on. A local shop replaced the throttle body, that corrected the low rpm with a/c on but it still died and stalled intermittently. Read about Sam's shop in CAR TALK on line. Drove 18 miles to get there, explained the problem to Sam. He gave me a loaner car and said he would call when it was done. He called late that day so I had to go back the next morning. He explained the parts he replaced and told me to drive the car for a week and if the trouble is gone then I could pay him(unheard of). Unfortunately the repairs didn't work. Went back and Sam removed the new parts and put back my old parts, advised me where to bring my car(did not charge me, unheard of). After 2 hours in the 3rd shop got lucky and they found the problem. I am 67 years old and worked as a Sales & Service Rep for over 35 years. I've met thousands of people in my life but Sam stands out at the top my list as honest, caring and the politest man I've met. Sammy, you have restored my faith in mankind!

Sammy kept my Honda in great shape for the sixteen years I had it. Still running, I got a new Toyota and I wouldn't trust anyone else for even the most routine work on it (oil chagnes--just what oil do those fast change places use, anyway?). Sam's new web site at "www.samseuroasian.com" has all the up-to-date information on this great shop.

I do a lot of work on my own cars - and am very picky about who I go to for stuff I choose not to do myself. I found Sam's European/etc. service from the listings here on the Cartalk website - so I called Sammy and talked to him for a little bit to get a feel of how he runs his shop. I liked him from the get-go - he was honest, pricing was very good, and he took the time to do things right. He may not be the cheapest guy around - but he is MUCH cheaper than my local dealer. I recommend him highly to anyone who wants quality work done on their cars at a good price.

I went to Sam based on the recommendations I found here, and it was the best advice I've ever taken! Sam's pride in his work is so obvious from the sparkling clean shop to his friendly attitude. Sam provides free loaner cars, explains everything before beginning work, will even provide an estimate of the parts and labor (with the caveat, of course, that the price may change), takes the time to answer questions, and is actually brimming with enthusiasm when he delves into an explanation of how your car works and what the problems may be. (Why didn't I have engineering professors like this when I was in school?) I used to own a 1989 Mazda 929 that had changed hands through various family members and had many hidden problems. I spent four years and who knows how much money to get it fixed by a Mazda dealer shop. Not until I went to Sam did it start running properly -- actually, better than it did when I first got it. I've sent my brother, my brother's girlfriend, my sister, and my fiance to Sam, and they've all been satisfied.

Frankly, I never thought I would ever be writing to tell you how enjoyable mmy experience with a mechanic was. I read about Sam on this page a week ago, and called to see if they could fix an emission problem with my Toyota Camry. I told him I had been plugging in parts to no avail, and he replied that 'the diagnostic code is only the first step...your problem could be caused by 4 or 5 components, but we'll fix it for you, and we'll take it in for the emission test." In the next few days I solved the problem (intechanged vacuum lines) but decided anybody this highly recommended was worth a try. I brought my car in, and asked sam to replace the timing belt and water pump. Instead of just saying "Yes, that wil be $XXX," he produced a drawing of a similar engine, and telling me the additional work which he felt would be worthwhile, and explained why. (Engine seals, drive belts, tensioner, etc.) He gave me a loaner car, and said he's call me with a progress report. He called that afternoon, but said after road testing the car, he felt a wheel alignment would be worthwhile (which he subbed out) and also that when his mechanic checked the trans fluid it was very dirty. He had replaced it, assuming that I had approved the job, which I hadn't. Sam said "It was my fault, a miscommunication, and you don't have to pay for that service ($40) if you don't want to, because you didn't authorise it." Amazing! Of course I did pay for it, but his courtesy in giving me the option not shows me how ethical he is, and is why I'll be taking my car here as long as I live in the area. Sam runs a great shop, and is also a fine gentleman. Highly recommended!

Undoubtedly the best shop in the nation. Sam is efficient, educated, hospitable, and a complete joy for anyone to do business with. I travel from the city of Chicago to the suburbs to receive the best service every time. No matter what procedure is needed Sam will go out of his way to accommodate your every need. Thank you Sam I will see you in 5,000 miles for my next oil change! Eddie, Chicago.
