I've been going to Dave for over 20 years. More than once I've said I think something's needed--a tuneup, a brake job, say--and when I picked the car up Dave has told me it isn't needed yet and he's fixed whatever had made me think it was needed, for a lot less than I would have paid for the full job. His prices aren't cut-rate, but I've always thought they were fair. He's terrific at explaining what he's going to do or has done; and I have female friends who say the same. Dave's most amazing quality is his ability to remember names--even after a two-year hiatus (when I've had a new car and didn't need service), he never falters in knowing who I am, or as far as I tell, anyone who has been in his shop once.

I heard of good things about Dave. So I took my Merkur xr4ti to him when it sprung a leak. He diagnosed a bad head gasket, but he didn't want to replace it. The turbo made him nervous. He said I should take it to the dealer (although he had concerns about that dealer). The dealer quoted me a price of $48 per head bolt (it takes 10). I didn't ask for any more information from them. I called Dave back. He said I must have misunderstood. I assured him that I had asked them if they were sure that $48 was not the price of the 10 bolt set. He called a parts outlet, found that he COULD get 10 bolts for less than $48. So now he is outraged. He still wasn't ready to commit. I said, "Dave, throw a rag over the turbo and it's a 2.2 liter Ford engine." I rode my bike down there to see how it was going. He had a rag over the turbo (probably goofing on me). He charged me less for the parts and labor than the dealer wanted for the bolts.

I discovered Dave Seydel 20+ years ago and I've taken every car I've owned to him ever since, including new cars still under dealer warranty. Dave is everything one might dream about in an auto mechanic, particularly in the areas of honesty and competence. This is a guy who knows how to treat his customers right. I recommend Dave Seydel without reservation.

Dave Seydel is a straight shooting guy with a knack for explaining complicated problems with ease to people like me who don't know anything about cars. He's never taken advantage of me and always put in 110% effort.

My husband and I found Dave through this website and I'm so happy that we did! We've been taking our Nissans there since we moved here two years ago and everything that the other commenters has said is true. This is the first time I've had a mechanic that I felt like I could trust to give me the straight story, and he always remembers exactly who we are when we call with our car emergencies. Recently both of our cars blew out at the same time and he fit us into his busy schedule at the last minute to get us up and running fast, and the bill came in way under what he estimated and what I had feared! Also, when we had an accident earlier this year, we took the car to him and though he doesn't do bodywork, he gave us the name of someone in town who does, and that person's estimate came in $800 lower than any of the other estimates that we got. I love taking my car to Dave...as much as you can ever love it when your car breaks down!

Dave is the best. I moved to Iowa City as a grad student w/o a lot of money. I was also afraid I'd be taken advantage of because I'm a woman. But with these guys I was always treated fairly. He fixed up my car when I had major problems and got it in shape to get me back home to NC (1000 miles). Dave is such an awesome guy he even told me I could call him on the road if I had problems. This is not your ordinary mechanic. He's an honest man who seems to really take pride in what he does. Thanks so much Dave!
