Gary Masters rates are extremely reasonable. All jobs done right the first time, on time. Explains what's going on. I recently moved from Athens and I really miss the garage.

Gary is the only mechanic I've ever had with whom I felt that I could drop off my car and a blank check and just ask him to let me know what amount to record in my check register. When the Jeep dealership diagnosed bad motor mounts for a few hundred dollars, Gary discovered a small clamp underneath the body had broken and was causing the vibration ($40). When another place diagnosed a bad rear main seal for a few hundred dollars, Gary found that it was only a small gasket elsewhere and that the oil was simply running back toward the rear main seal ($30). If he thinks a repair was so minor that it wasn't worth mentioning, he'll say, "Don't worry about it," when I take out my checkbook. If I call him with a problem, he nearly invariably diagnoses it accurately over the phone, and because he's so busy, he isn't out to get my money. He'll sometimes say on the phone, "Now, this is something I think you can fix yourself. First, you need to . . ." He told me one time (after he'd done an excellent and inexpensive job for a single-mother whom I had referred to him), "Aw, I could cheat people out of a lot of money on their first visit and never see them again, but I'd rather do right by you and know that you'll keep coming back forever." The only downside to Gary is that, because he's chosen to stay small (just he and one other mechanic in the shop), you have to make an appointment--sometimes a week or two in advance. Also, he doesn't take credit cards and doesn't bother with some issues (brakes, transmission). However, what he does, he does exceptionally.
