Bob Reinheimer is absolutely the best automotive technician (NAISE Certified). Above all, he is honest and ethical, and takes the necessary time required to explain car problems to everyone in a competent, and efficient manner (Bob used to be a school teacher, and this skill undoubtedly helps in this respect). Proper estimates are always given, and there are NO SURPRISES when you pick up your vehicle. Bob will prioritize repairs, so you will know which repairs should be done first, which is very helpful if you are managing your funds, and cannot afford to do all repairs at one time.. His full service shop is also a California Certified Gold Shield & CAP Station, which does Smog Checks and complete Smog repairs paid for by the State of California's Consumer Assistance Program. The shop also works on classic vehicles, which is indeed a plus for my 1983 Mercedes 300D and my 1969 Volkswagon Beetle.

I am hopelessly biased because Bob has been my mechanic of choice for over 20 years. I have dealt with other shops when my car was new, under warranty, and I lived an hour's drive away, or if I got a flat while out of town, so I have experienced other shops. That's why I was willing to drive my car an hour north to San Francisco when I lived in Mountain View. Richmond Auto may deal with some pretty fancy-schmantzy cars, but they are *not* a fancy-schmantzy place. They treated my battered old '60 Dodge with the same respect they now accord my Mustang GT. If you need a shop to look like a showroom, this is not your place. If, however, you need an absolutely trustworthy mechanic with lots of experience and mad skills, you can get that here. On top of that, they obviously assume being a woman doesn't mean you don't and/or can't understand how your car works. But wait! There's more! I have absolute confidence that anyone who enjoys Car Talk will also enjoy talking to Bob if they get lucky and come in on a slow day :)

Oh no! I made mistakes in the last review! First, neighborhood safety should have been 4 stars not 3. The neighborhood isn't perfect, but it isn't horrible and it has been improving over the years. Second, the hours of operation also should have been 4 not 3. They're not a dealership or a huge shop, so they are closed on the weekends, but they understand you have a life too and have always been more than reasonable about working with my schedule. I don't know how I messed that up, and can't figure out how to fix it :(

I have used Bob and Vin for over 20 years, ever since I became fully employed and could no longer do all the work my self. They have done every thing from an engine rebuild to smog test. When I had a 1988 Nissan xe van they manufactured parts that were no longer available as it lived to 22 years of age. With their expertise I would still have it if it had not been lemon lawed and thus particular parts could no longer be found. They have worked on my Tercel,Prelude and Scion with excellent results. Right now I am rebuilding a 1974 Karmann Gia and Bob has been an indispensable fountain of knowledge as well as a mechanical genius in solving problems for me. I have never brought a problem to the shop that they were not able to do. Both Bob and Vin are dedicated car enthusiasts as well as journey man mechanics. If there is one issue I have had over the years is them not taking new customers at various times because of too much business. If your like me when ever a business tells you not to due something as it is not needed instead of taking your money I always come back. Nuff said?
