All the other comments are accurate. Yes, Smitty's is horrendously busy. Yes, they will take your car immediately if there is an emergency. Yes, they will stay late if necessary. (Theoretically, the shop closes at six. I guess it's happened, but you couldn't prove it by me.) They are scrupulously honest and always look for the least expensive solution to any problem. I'm as comfortable going in there without my husband as I am with him; I can say that about no other mechanic I've patronized over the years. We moved out of the neighborhood over a year ago but still take our cars to Smitty's.

Run by the grandson (Mike Egan) of the man who started the place about 60 years ago, and that's rare continuity these days. Small operation, only 8 guys; all of them good to great mechanics and all of them honest and proud of it. I wish I had an equally good doctor/dentist/vet/plumber/etc. The only problem here is that they are always so busy that any non-urgent work gets an appointment a month to 6 weeks away, but if you're a regular customer with an emergency you get in that day, even if it makes somebody stay an hour or 2 late. I'm crazy to tell ANYbody about them and make the wait longer, but I couldn't stand to see them not mentioned.

I love Mike and the guys at the shoppe! After 4 horrible experiences at local dealerships, I was frantic to find *someone* who wouldn't look at me and see a checkbook in a skirt. I was referred to Smitty's by a gentleman working at a local auto-parts place. Mike was so attentive when we spoke, no B.S., no invoice padding, just an honest conversation about what needed to be done on the car. I was so thrilled with his service I have referred dozens of people to his garage, I know of 6 who have gone there, and thanked me for the referral. I recently moved to OC and will make the trip to SD to have Smitty's work on my cars.

Smitty's is a scrupulously honest shop. Here's just one example of several I could cite. I took my Toyota pickup into them twice because it was losing (or burning) coolant, and I couldn't find a leak anywhere. To some shops, this would be like writing a blank check for replacing the entire cooling system and maybe the head gasket, too. The first time, Smitty's replaced just the radiator cap (which was old an needed replacing) and charged me for the part only. When I brought it back a few weeks later because it was still losing coolant, they pressure tested it for a full day and still couldn't find a leak, nor did they see any evidence that the engine was burning coolant. When I came to pick it up, they charged me nothing for their efforts and suggested I try a bottle of radiator stop leak. I did, and this stopped the coolant loss, at least for the last several months. Where the coolant was going is still a mystery, but at least I got the problem fixed for just a few bucks. In fact, Smitty's has frequently recommended against unnecessary repairs. You might think this would be bad for business, but Smitty's is so popular that I have to schedule non-emergency repairs two or three weeks ahead of time. I only wish that Smitty's did bigger jobs, too (like transmissions and engine rebuilds), but for these they have at least referred me to other reliable shops.

After moving to the neighborhood a year ago, I just had my first repair at Smitty's, and I have to say that I am very pleased. They were very friendly, seemed quite knowledgeable, and were very efficient in performing the services on my car. Don't be put off by the mounted bison heads in the office, or the perpetual crowd of cars in their lot-- they simply attest to the age and popularity of this reliable neighborhood mechanic. I did have to make an appointment about a week in advance, but I hear they will make room for urgencies if need be. I've only been there once so far, but I definitely plan on going back.

We have taken our Ford and Mercedes to Smitty's and have had nothing but, positive experiences with them. They have been honest, cost sensitive and reliable. The only complaint is that they are always busy! We strongly recommend them!

So, I know a little about cars, which is more dangerous than knowing nothing at all. These guys were telling me about what operation they wanted to do and I noticed that as I threw out terms that I knew, they adjusted their level of tech-talk to meet mine. It's no secret that these guys are awesome, it's a constant mad-house of customers. When they are talking to you, however, you're the only person that matters. Also, they offer 2 scheduling options emergency (sooner) or regular (a week or so in advance). I had them replace my exhaust manifold (97 jeep cherokee) which required them to pull the engine during a regular time slot. I dropped the jeep off at 9, and picked it up, ready to go, at 4. 10,000 miles later, things are still going strong. Oh yeah, did I mention that they were $400 cheaper than the dealership?

I brought my Lexus in for an alternator a little over a year ago, and was impressed with the service. Recently my battery light came on so I called the owner, Mike Magers. He told me it was probably the alternator. He said that he was booked for the next two weeks but this could leave me stranded. Since this was an "emergency" repair they worked me in in spite of their busy schedule. When I arrived early the next day he checked their records and found it had been 14 months. They still warranted their work even though they claim a 1 year warranty!!! Service like this is why my friends and I continue to frequent Smittys Service.

When my fourteen year-old Miata was making noises the radio could no longer mask, I brought it to Smitty's. I was on the verge of buying a new car and they not only diagnosed and fixed the problem quickly and affordably but they convinced me that it is a great car and I should keep it and save myself some money. Nate and Mike in the office were great--they explained everything to me until I understood the problem. I didn't get the name of "the Mazda specialist" who worked on my car but he did a great job. I'll refer all my friends to Smitty's!
