One Time back when I had a '75 Caddilac, I called several shops around town asking what needed to be done about a "clacking" sound coming from my motor. I called at least five different places getting the same answer: Valve Job, and prices ranging from $700 to $1100. Then I asked my friend what mechanic she went to, and she told me. His name is Joe Bonk. I called him, explained the problem, and after saying that he could do a valve job for around $650, he asked me if my oil was low...also if ity was low, that could be the source of the disturbinng noise. I said I didn't know. So, I checked my oil, and sure enough, I was about two Quarts low. For this I thank him, and I feel that he deserves to have recognition as one of California's best mechanics... My opinion.. Y.J.

In several dealings with Joe, I have found him to be honest, efficient, fairpriced and always has ime to stop and answer questions. Joe is the epitome of the old neighborhood mechanic who is both well qualified and becomes a friend to whom one is not afraid of being cheated and knows that the job will be done properly and efficiently. Joe Bonk solved a problem with my Ford E150 van that had everyone stumped. It was an obscure problem and he stuck to it like a pit bull till he figured it out. When we went to pick up the van my wife opined that the bill would have to be extra larg. I told her I did'nt care, the van runs. Joe's bill was shockingly reasonable, I almost said are you sure that this is enough ?, but stopped myself in time. Additionally he is a very nice guy. I recomend him highly.

Took the car to Bonk because the check engine light was on (thermostat function). Instead of selling me parts and labor I didn't need, he spent 30 minutes showing me how to diagnose the problem and how to change the thermostat if necessary. Nice, knowledgable guy who isn't in business to get rich, just fixes cars to pass the time. (his words)

In a world of veneer Joe Bonk is solid wood. My son drove cross country in his new to him very low mileage Buick Lesabre. After a few days in San Diego his car started to stall on low speed deceleration, a potential dangerous occurrence. I found Joe's shop from Car Talk. After talking to Joe for five minutes I knew my son was in good hands. Joe made the time to see my son's car the next business day. The car did not throw any codes but Joe made it clear he would have to be reasonably confident that a particular part was the culprit before he would change a part and waste his customers money. The car was fixed by replacing the correct part. Joe was extremely generous with his time and patient while educating us.It is my pleasure to recommend Bonk's Automotive with the highest rating.
