Doug is unique in that if you let him know you do minor repairs yourself he will let you know if it's something you can do yourself and is very good about answering any questions you have.

Ok Doug never worked on my car BUT he did a "phone diagnosis" that was right on. The water pump on our '92 Subaru Loyale broke on my way through Modesto at 10 o'clock at night. Stranded we spent the night in a "no- tell motel" an eye opening experience for my 11 year old son! I called my husband in Long Beach who found Doug on the cartalk site. When I called Doug he was too booked to help me out BUT he spent about 20 minutes on the phone diagnosising the problem and making suggestions/reccomendations. I called him back later to ask a few questions and he encouraged me to call again if I needed any more help-I felt I had an advocate in Doug. Beyond the basic check the fuilds, change the oil I am not not very automotively savvy. Doug was so helpful and despite his work load took the time to help a stranded stranger understand her car and how to go about geting it repaired in an unfamiliar town without getting scr*w*d. I salute Doug for being a decent human being and by the sound of it a damn fine mechanic. The Golden Spanner Award goes to Doug Foss.

After taking my car to local mechanic deemed "trustworthy" by my father and receiving a quote of $6-700 to replace the "degenerating" motor mounts on my 1992 Toyota Paseo, I took it to Doug for the routine tune-up. I told him about the motor mounts and he assured me that they do *not* degenerate, but these Toyota motor mounts simply harden, transferring the engine vibration to the body of the car. The replacement was not necessary and if I still wanted to do it, he would charge about $350. In addition, he only charged about $385 for a routine tune-up, engine adjustment and maintenance replacements. He explained every upcoming maintenance replacement and how long it could go before requiring attention and told me what I really didn't need to do. I recommend him to everyone I know.
