Ever since I found Bob, I feel very confident that I will not be "taken for a ride" when I take my car in for maintenance and repairs. University Imports is a small shop, so the mechanics know you by your car ("Hi, this is so and so with the 89 Mazda 626" and they know who I am and the history of my car.) Bob is a master mechanic and only works on Mazdas, so he really knows what he is doing. (Kiran, the other mechanic has the same credentials with Volkswagens.) They take the time to explain what needs to be done in plain English. They will also be honest with you whether or not something needs to be done now or if it can wait. I've even had them tell me how to fix something minor myself, rather than charge minimum labor (an hour) for 10 minutes of work! Even though I have moved into Sacramento, I still take my car back to them without any hesitation or desire to find something closer to me.

They fixed several long-term problems I had with my car, some which I had reported to and/or partially fixed by another shop. They also have a very nice new shop that is easy to get to. They were very helpful to me when I needed to get my car smog-tested in a "test-only" test center this year -- they gave me a good recomendation as to where to take and made sure the car was ready to be tested. My car is now running better than it has in years and I hope to get at least 4 more years out of it - for a total of 20 years:) !

Bob only did the work requested and did not charge labor to replace drive belts when replacing timing belt. Prompt and compitent.

I wandered into this shop with my geriatric VW GTI when I was a starving grad student. They did GREAT work every time and helped keep my crappy car running much longer than it should have. They went the extra mile to find refurbished or gently used parts to help keep my bill down (without making me feel like a cheapskate). This shop started out very small a few years ago and has grown quickly...it's nice to see the American dream rewarding hardworking, honest people!

It's not easy to find a mechanic who understands (and loves) old VW vanagons, but Karan has been great maintaining my '84. Recently I needed it serviced where I have it garaged (150 miles from Davis), and I ended up driving it here to have it repaired. They are friendly, efficient, and the price for their excellent service is reasonable.

I have a thing for Karan. But I wouldn't return if they didn't do really good work on my car.

These guys are really superb. I have taken my car there for the last 10 years. Not the same car! I own 2 saabs. Now I will also take my Scion there for servicing and repairs. Very reasonable prices and very competent guys. Hope John (the owner) does not decide to retire.

They called back to let us know that there were fewer repairs than initially estimated and that the cost would be less.
