Some years ago, the clutch on my son's 83 Tercel gave out-- he was down in LA, so he went to a cheapo place to have it fixed. Shortly after, the instrument panel shorted out, so he took it back, and a little while later it was fixed. A couple of weeks ago, my son came up, complaining that the clutch was slipping. Bob discovered that the whole assembly had been put in wrong, the firewall had been cut away to make it easier for them, they had damaged the radiator and smog device in the process; and one of his mechanics found the back-up light switch disconnected. He automatically reconnected it, and yesterday I heard from my son (now back in LA) that his instruments had shorted again. Bob figures that the back-alley butchers had simply disconnected the backup light switch after the short occurred. Naturally, though, on the unlikely chance he or his crew did something, he's offering a refund. I think my son has learned something about quality.

Bob has a PhD in Comparative Religions. He knows WHY his conscience has to remain clean! Bob explains everything in detail and does not perform unnecessary repairs (even if YOU think they are necessary). His prices are on the higher side, but way lower than dealers.

I took my toyota celica to Redfield before driving to NY. He explains all things thoroughly and honestly and I wish that I can find a mechanic like him where ever I end up moving to in the future. Great job. July 2000

Bob Redfield has worked on my car once, but helped me with it four times. The first two times, I called about a fuel relay on my 90 Accord. He said he could replace it, but referred me to the dealer since they could do more thorough testing and, in the long run, do it for less. Second time was an electrical problem. Bob told me how to diagnose whether it was the alternator or battery, saying that I could do it myself and save money. Another time, he advised me on whether to replace my fuel gauge. Most recently, I had a problem with my axal. Bob quoted me a price for new parts, then spent a lot of time searching for cheaper, used ones. In the end, it cost half of the original quote, and the repair is perfect far as I can tell. When I picked the car up, he even showed me the old part that he had to remove and explained how it worked and what went wrong with it. I left with a better understanding of my car and a fatter wallet, and I would not hesitate for a second to call him again. I wholeheartedly recommend Redfield Machine to anyone who is looking for an honest mechanic who doesn't mind working his hardest on every job.

A scrupulously honest man, who knows how to keep older cars running in an economical way. I finished grad school in Davis moved away, but would still be taking my car there if I could. If only there were more mechanics like him.

I've been going to Bob's shop for ten years. He will work on most anything but he will first determine what you need and how long you expect to own the car. He is one of the rare mechanics who will argue that "it's not worth fixing....let it rattle until the car dies." Bob takes pains to explain everything and in the one time (over a ten year period working on my five vehicles) the shop made a mistake he was truly sorry and repaired the car immediately. He always stresses safety and if he thinks you can have it fixed somewhere else cheaper he directs you to another shop. Bob should be awarded the highest honor in the Car Talk Hall of Fame. A great and honest mechanic who knows his limits and trys to understand yours.

Bob has few peers in the field of automotive repair. In short, Bob is the Best.

I used the cartalk website to find Bob and Redfield Machine, so I wanted to pass the favor along. My cars were never repaired by Bob, but he checked them over for the base cost of labor many times when I got nervous about one thing or other. He always explained what the problem was and what the cost of repair would be, and would let me know in light of the value of my car (I had two over the course of my time in Davis) whether the repair was necessary and worth the cost. And every time I got an oil change he checked the basics for me and would give me a full report without trying to sell me anything. How often does that happen? Very nice and personable guy, in addition to being honest. It's a great feeling to know a mechanic you can trust. Definitely worth the trouble of trying to figure out where his shop is for the first time!
