Roger is awesome!!! He has worked on my two VW Passats for the past 5 years. They are both 10 years old, but he keeps them running well at a reasonable price. I really like the fact that he explains what he's doing and is willing to answer any questions I have (especially since I'm a woman and have sometimes been treated by other mechanics as if I don't need to know the details!)

It is just a very relaxed an knowlegable place to take you car. They do not force repairs on you, but will tell you if you need to have it done NOW or can wait a couple of months. They know their VW's!

I brought my car in on monday morning for major servicing, expecting them to hold it for a few days. It was done within a few hours and I picked it up the very same day. Roger and Tim are very friendly.

My VW Jetta went through 3 months of dead batteries in which my local garage replaced the alternator (2X), the belts and the batteries (4X) where they (luckily) only charged me the first time. Unfortunately, the original problem was never solved - that is after leaving my car (fully charged and with brand new charging system) for 3 days, one and half weeks, and two weeks when I was away - I returned to a dead car each time. My local garage swore that they could find nothing wrong with my car (maybe it was a bad lot of batteries!). I searched the cars.com site and found Berkeley Auto Service and I brought my Jetta in - they asked me a few questions - checked out the battery and wiring, did a discharge test.....and found a malfunctioning trunk light which stayed on even when the trunk was shut and therefore draining the battery. They just charged me for the labor - because they could not get hold of me to ok ordering new parts. Great guys - they know their VWs. they listened to my story - also gave me some good advice to keep my 10 yo (136K miles) running to a possible 300K miles. They have a Better Business Bureau sticker. They are professionals. Go there.

First call about the problem, Roger told me this issue (window problem) was a recall and call the dealer to repair. After finding out it was an extended warranty, not a recall, he said, "B@#!a#ds! It WAS a recall!" He got the job done in the same day for a lot less than the dealer quoted. When I picked it up, he made a sad face - the price was 1.71 over his quote (taxes). I like his approach.

I took my car twice to the local VW dealer (Broadway Volkswagen) to have a problem fixed, spending more than $700 and neither time was the problem fixed. I called Roger who diagnosed the problem over the phone. I took it in, he fixed it at a fair price. He is now my mechanic for life.

Roger and team are a dream. Very honest and straightforward, know VWs perfectly, and their prices are very reasonable. In my case they had to replace the Airbag controller in my new beetle, a $600 part. The dealer screwed up and gave them the wrong part. Not only that: because it's electronics, you can not return the part, or so the dealer said. When Roger found out he fought with them, and ended up not charging me a dime, even if they had wasted 15+ hours trying to make it work and chances were he would not get his money back. I wish i could find him anything remotely closely to them around here. I forgot, the way i met them - i stop by to get a headlight changed (yeah, beetle headlights are hardcore). To my surprise they did it for free, and when i offered him so cash " at least for a beer" he told me it was all good. How great is that?

Roger and Berkeley Auto Service are the best for VW. They basically saved my life when I bought a run down VW cabriolet in a pinch. It had weird problems that they were always able to figure out and fix, their costs were beyond reasonable, and most importantly it always felt really good to go there. They are brilliantly competent.
