All the mechanics at Gabe's have lots of experience. They don't hire kids fresh out of auto repair school to start out changing tires. Beginning mechanics have 2-3 years of experience. I've never had Gabe's suggest an unnecessary repair. Big and small jobs alike are always done flawlessly. They willingly accept parts provided by the owner and install them without complaint.

My experience with Gabes was with a 1987 Dodge van with a slant 6. I believe the mechanic is of the old school and he knows his way around the old engine and carburetor.

I brought my car to Gabes after reading out the company on "Car Talk": they did not disappoint. They were straightup about the cost of the work that I asked them about. I went there to winterize my car for the Alaska winter, do routine maintenance and de-bug a 'check engine' fault. They succeeded on all three counts. They also gave me a ride both to and from the garage, which I really appreciated. I highly recommend them.

I've always taken my trucks to the local Ford dealership for repairs. I do most of the preventive stuff myself. I wanted to find a good shop for front end and brake work because that was two areas where I wasn't completely happy with my experience with the local Ford dealership. Based on Cartalk's Mechanic's Files Reviews for Gabe's Truck and Auto, I tried Gabes. I asked Gabes to take a look at the front end and brakes. I wanted anything needing repair to be repaired. In addition, I asked for an alignment if it was needed after they did any front end work, I told them that my front tires were wearing faster on the inside, and I told them that the truck pulled to the right when I braked. They were able to get me in the next workday which surprised me a bit and maybe should have set off a warning in my head. I brought it in and again repeated what I wanted them to do. Later that day I got a call from Gabe's and they detailed a lot of brake work they wanted to do and some small thing with the front end. I didn't remind them about an alignment during that call because I figured they had that down. The next day they finished the work and I came for the truck. I took it home and then looked at the invoice. I didn't see any hint of even an alignment check. I called them and asked if they'd done an alignment and the person on the phone said no. He said there must have been an issue with communication... He said they could schedule me for an alignment but since they had two opportunities to document my detailed request I knew at that point that I was through with this shop forever. I declined to bring my truck back to them and scheduled an alignment check at the local Ford dealer. Ford wasn't able to do an alignment until they replaced some front end parts that needed replacing. I asked Ford to keep the parts for me (so I could evaluate them myself). I got my needed alignment after the additional front end work was completed. So Gabe's failed to professionally check and repair my front end and they left off the needed alignment all together. The brake job and the tiny bit they did to my front end came to about $2100. Maybe they thought that's all I'd be good for, and their fees were definitely professional level charges. My recommendation for Gabe's is that you avoid them. There are safer places to take your vehicle. My truck may not even have been safe to drive due to front end issues after I'd picked up my truck from Gabes. After the Ford mechanic evaluated my front end I was advised that it would be best not to drive it until they replaced those additional parts. If you're looking for a good mechanic in the Fairbanks area, avoid Gabes. I was taken in by the reports here and I want to help you avoid the mistake I made.
