A Good Mechanic is Hard to Find. Recently I went to a big chain shop to have the air conditioning recharged in my car. The price was $100, which is pretty fair. Mildly cool air lasted for about an hour, and then nothing. I went back a week later, and they told me it would cost $700 for a new accumulator and a second recharge. I said NO, because I was sensing that the counter guy was merely reading from a script and not being straightforward. I then went to Ruxton Car Care the following week and asked Richard to check for a leak, recharge the system, and also check the accumulator. Results: The accumulator is fine (they really don't go bad very often), there is no leak (he ran the AC for 2 hours to be certain), and I got nice cold air again for $75!! When I got there to pick up the car, it was too cold inside. Here's what I think happened: the staff at the other shop either never charged the system the first time at all($100 for nothing), hoping I would return for the unnecessary $700 repair, or, they didn't charge it correctly the first time, which makes them incompetent. I believe the first scenario occurred, because Richard at Ruxton Car Care, who didn't try to play games with me, was quite puzzled with the accumulator diagnosis and was unable to find a leak after running the AC for 2 straight hours. The air is still nice and cold. The day I was at the other shop and got the $700 estimate, I almost went for it, because I don't have much time for these sorts of things, and I was tired of being hot during my 30 mile commute. Shameful, sad, and nearly criminal...really. Thanks Ruxton Car Care for saving me from being royally screwed.

I used to take my cars here to be serviced by Richard. A lot of times he would give me an estimate, which I would agree to. Then when I would come in to pick-up my car, the bill would always be much higher. This annoyed me and because he never told me before I came in. This raised into question his honesty and integrity. There were many times I felt he was cheating me. I showed my current mechanic papers from Richard, and he said, "He definitely was padding the bill!" So my assumptions were correct. He never seemed to appreciate my business. Sometimes he was very rude. Obviously I decided to get my cars serviced elsewhere. I would recommend you do that same.
