I went to Allen's when my 1998 Ford Taurus wagon wouldn't pass DC's car inspection (which basically amounts to, is your check engine light on, and mine was). They approached it very professionally (I came in as a new customer and the only information I had was that my check engine light was on, I'm sure they were rolling their eyes on the inside, but they were nice to me anyway). Addressed all of the issues that came up on the OBD and gave me a rundown of other things that they found that I probably want to keep in mind but didn't come up on the OBD and weren't pertinent (i.e. they didn't try to bleed me dry, but I hadn't been doing routine maintenance on the car so I appreciated their assessment). When the light came back on, they retested the car for free and took the time to explain why it probably came back on and what could be done to fix it (the one code that came up on the OBD was basically useless). I ended up having to get a new car in order to have a car in DC that passed the auto inspection. (keep in mind that before I ever went to Allen's, this car had already gone through a transmission, and an alternator in the less than 2 years I had it, the gas gauge didn't work properly cause there was a dent in the gas tank which I found after I bought it, etc etc) I take my new car to them for routine maintenance so I can keep this car for a long time. I also like that they give you a summary of all the work done that is actually easy to read, and they print all test results so you have a record in case you want to get a second opinion. You can also opt to add your car to an online system that reminds you when to do routine maintenance. They provide rides to and from the nearest metro station, and are just genuinely nice guys.

83 MB turbo-diesel: Dealer suggested new EGR and turbo waste gate. Repair at Allen amounted to removing a small spring at injector pump , cleaning it, and stretching it back to size. No recurrence of loss of power past 15 years for that reason.
