I have taken my car to Germantown Shell for routine maintenance (oil changes, brake checks, etc.) for 7 1/2 years. Never for major work. They have always seemed honest and I didn't use to feel as though they were "fishing" for work. However, my last 2 experiences there were not 100% satisfactory. Two visits ago, I left my car for an oil change. I got a phone call asking if I'd had my 120K mi. checkup, and a 5 minute survey of what that included (most of which I'd taken care of -- some at Germantown Shell). Some people may like the reminder, but I felt they were looking a little too hard for ways to charge me more than the $14.95 for the oil change. On my most recent visit, I asked them to check out a groan in the rear of the car, along with some other work. No one mentioned that there would be a $32 fee to check for the cause of the noise. The invoice said only "Check out charge." No further description. I was upset that a) I was not notified there would be a charge (in the past they checked brakes, etc. for free); and b) that for my money I didn't get a written report of what they found and a line- item estimate for repair (though I did get a phone call). Since I cannot get to the shop during their business hours without taking time off from work, I have written a letter asking them to send a written report. If they reply, they'll probably win me back. To sum up, the service at Germantown Shell seems to be going downhill. From my experience, the service they provide is good, and the prices generally reasonable for the area, but I advise others to make sure you ask UP FRONT about all charges, and be prepared for them to suggest additional work you didn't ask for.
