I went over a small snow bank and began to hear a rattling sound in the right rear. I brought it in to Brake King to be looked at and the guy told me I needed new struts, and it would cost me $800 and they could do the work that week. I told him that was too much and asked if it was dangerous to drive until it got worse and if something would fall off. I told him I drive long stretches on the highway often. He said no, it would not be dangerous. I asked him about the rattle and he said it was related to the struts but nothing would fall off. He told me soon I would start to notice my gas mileage getting worse, though. The guy took out a pad and paper and said he could do the job for 700 if I brought it in soon. He told me it would cost me more in gas over time if I did not fix it. I left. I drove it on the highway for a week and my gas mileage had gotten dramatically worse since my visit to Brake King. I crawled under the car myself. I saw that the muffler clamp housing was broken. I went to a local backyard mechanic that a friend recommended and he put a bolt on the muffler clamp and also checked the pressure in my tires. One was missing 10 pounds. My mysterious loss of mileage after my visit to Brake King is now fixed and the rattle in the back is gone. I don't know definitively if they took the pressure out of the tire or not but it seems probable. I saved $700 and perhaps prevented an accident by losing a muffler on the highway by taking it for a second opinion. I am not surprised by their actions to extract money. What I am shocked about is that at the very least, I feel it was their ethical duty to have warned me that I may lose a part on the highway if I did not have the rattling problem fixed that day. They not only were trying to take advantage of me financially, they were endangering my life by telling me it was safe to drive without consequence. Please be safe and stay away from this place. This problem with my car was an obvious one. There is no excuse, no margin of error, no benefit of the doubt in this scenario. What they did was wrong and unethical on every level.
