I am sadly pretty used to mechanics in England and upper New York State trying to take advantage of the fact that I am female and know squat about cars, although I do ask a lot of questions. My most recent acquisition was a 500 dollar Mazda 323, which ran well enough but needs that occasional tweaking. Shane was the mechanic of a mechanically declined gal's and her budget's dreams. He always told me what absolutely HAD to be fixed, then offered me three levels of prices, the "the get you what you need", the "lasts longer and you can amortize it" and the "if you're going to hold on to this car for a long time, splurge on this" price. Whichever one I picked was not a problem, no pressure, and he ALWAYS somehow came in under the estimate. The ultimate for me was when, not knowing what was needed for inspection, but guessing, and I took it in for a tweaking and then asked where I should take it to get it inspected, he knew I was working all these crazy hours so he offered FREE of charge, and indeed did take it down and stand there at the inspectors in his mechanics coveralls and get it inspected for me on his lunch hour since I was crazy at work. When I tried to tip him for it, he refused adamantly. Honestly, for as long as I had the car, I used to lie awake and fret that he would leave me for another Mazda.
