I am here on Cape Ann on vacation, about 1400 miles from home. My car's computer died, though I didn't know that was the problem at the time. My grandparents (who live here) go to Family Car Care and recommended them, so I had them work on my car. When their initial solution -- changing the #4 spark plug -- didn't work they refunded what they had charged me for that repair, said they didn't have the diagnostic tools to figure out if it was a fuel injection or computer problem, and then FOUND a mechanic who did have the tools and was willing to fit me in on an emergency basis. (See my glowing comments about Auto Dyne.) While I was initially disappointed that they couldn't fix it themselves, I had to respect them for knowing their limits and finding me someone who could solve the problem. I was also most impressed at their efforts to help me find someone else to work on the car, and with their overall honesty, courtesy, and helpfulness.

I agree with all positive prior comments. Similar experience with a "failed sticker" as prior reviewer. Good with fitting in "unsafe to drive" emergencies. No appointments, only first-come, first served, so BE THERE by 6:45 if plan to wait. They have coffee in their dog-friendly waiting room. They are in an industrial park with second hand, hardware, and party stores there also; restaurant across road; dog-supply next door to park and park is on bus line that goes to Rockport and downtown Gloucester.

When I first moved here, this was the place recommended most. Most recently, I had to re-register the car, and it needed an inspection sticker. The first place I went to "failed" me and gave a list of repairs needed. Family Car Care gave me a second opinion, gratis, and an estimate that was lower by 50% and a job that was less in scope. No appointments, first come, first served. Located in an "industrial park" with a lot of interesting places to visit while you wait, if you find the waiting room boring. I suggest you arrive there by 6:45 am. When they give you a time estimate, you can then decide what to do: walk down the road and across the street for breakfast; walk to the beach, or take the bus to Rockport or Gloucester centers.

I've used these guys for years, even before I lived around the corner. Great to work with, nice guys, and they really know their stuff. I've talked to plenty of other customers who use them, haven't found a dissatisfied one yet.

EVERY time I've been in they've completed work early, gotten it right, and charged a reasonable price. You hear many stories about them on Cape Ann.. all to the effect that they exceeded customers expectations, and extended unexpected kindnesses. A local treasure, and one of the joys of living in a small town.
