I have dealt with the Ritchie's for a dozen years and find them to be honest, realistic and competent. They are excellent with foreign cars, specialty-trained in VWs. However they have handled other foreign cars and domestics with equal competence. For about three years our Gulf was in the habit of not starting on a random basis. They refused to try fixing it.. they werent able to get it to Not start and thus felt they couldn't undertake the repair. When we were in the north the mechanics there told us it was possibly the fuel pump and would cost $500. We waited until we returned to Lexington and on a day when the car would not start again, the Ritchies took it in and found a short in the wiring. This is a father and son operation in a small shop in a not- great part of town. They are not near public transportation and they don't like to leave cars standing out overnight. If you arrive before they close, they will put the car inside the shop for the night. They will explain the need for repair thoroughly and their estimates are nearly exact. They will listen carefully to what you have to say and take that as part of their diagnostic information. I don't know whether car repairs are really high -- everything seems expemsive to me. However, when I have had the car looked over out-of-town and not paid so much, invariably the job is inferior to the Ritchies. I operate on the holistic treatment for my daughter's car and my truck and they keep them running long after they are supposed to fall to dust. (Our truck is 11 years old and our VW Gulf is 14.) To me having a great repair-person is like having a reliable doctor -- of ineatimable value.
