Heat, Bumper to Bumper Traffic, and a Dead Battery It seems to be an unspoken fact that to get from Kalamazoo, MI to Lafayette, IN (Purdue University) it doesn't pay to drive the straightest direction. Therefore, a southwest drive and then a south east drive is in order, leading us to drive west on I-94 toward Gary and then take I-65 south. During a July 4th weekend trip to Purdue, to set up my home-away-from-home apartment, my husband and I ended up sitting on I-94 for nearly an hour in bumper to bumper traffic. Consequently, seeing the next available rest area, we stopped to relieve ourselves and spend just about all the spare change we could find on vending machine goodies. But when we got back into our GMC truck, it wouldn't start; it only clickkkkk, clickkkkk, clickkkkked. My husband opened the hood, cleaned off the battery connectors, and tried again... but again it just clicked. That rest area was brimming over with fourth of July travelers but no one asked if we needed help. I began a somewhat loud survey of who had a set of jumper cables (since we just recently took ours out of the truck!). One young mother called to her husband to bring theirs, and he and my husband spent about a half hour trying to get our truck started. My husband finally had to tell the husband 'Thank you... but we cannot take up any more of your time.' We ran toward the vending machines where we saw men earlier filling the machines up, but they didn't know of anyone to call. I was banging on the front and then the back and then the front door of the employee room, only to find that my husband had found the man unlocking a much needed extra bathroom. He reccomended three towing services, all of which said they were so swamped that they didn't know if or when they could get out to us. My husband called the last name on the list, "Music Towing." They were out to us in 20 minutes, spent only about 10 minutes fiddling around with the truck, and then said that we needed a new battery... that we didn't have to worry about our alternator... and that they could fix us up. They loaded our GMC onto their six-geared truck, drove us to the station, and had us ready to go in 15 minutes, giving us an extra receipt for our car insurance company reimbursement. Oh... and we did, actually, have one man offer us help while we were finally waiting for the two truck. My husband and I seem to be overly outgoing, when it comes to offering help. We will certainly keep up with that habit. Happy Fourth!!!
