Just waiting for an oil change can be a pleasure: today, I got to hear Mike and an old guy customer having an in-depth conversation about how much they love to cook and where to get the best parmigiano reggiano in town. All that and a 20-minute oil change and checkup that cost a lot less than the Insta-lubitron joints. Mike and his most excellent staff have been reliable, affordable, and HONEST caretakers of my two little cars over the past ten years. They're good at not making customers feel dumb. And it's a little like taking your pet to a good veterinarian: they know my car personally, and boy, does it enjoy the attention. When I was a kid, this is what I imagined an auto repair shop would be like. It's in the downtown on a crowded little lot. The four-seater waiting area is spotless, but only has magazines that have the word "Auto" in the title. And it smells like grease, so you know there's something going on. Everyone's smart, nice, and busy, and you can tell that old people kind of look forward to car trouble so they can spend a little time there. Mike's Auto is the opposite of a mullet: at Mike's it's party in the front, business in the back.
