I am from Michigan and had an overheating problem while visiting in Lake Forest, IL on a Sunday. AAA called Sal & Sons for tow. They offered to waive extra mile charges if I let them do the repair. Pretty sure it was just a thermostat so I had them quote it and said OK. Followed the tow to their shop and immediately became uneasy- looked like the perfect place that would rip off an out-of-towner - especially as I had to leave it there and return to Michigan, and the machanic took great pains to point out that any engine damage would not show until after the thernostat was replaced. I thought he was setting me up for a blown head gasket or warpped head notice in a day or two. To my surprise they called on Tuesday morning and said they thought a nearby Saab dealer would be able to handle it better if it was more than a thermostat and would not charge me for their diagnostic. The mechanic- Dave Duncan even drove the car over to the Saab dealer -no charge. So I can't comment on expertise, but at least one guy there appears to really want the best for the customer.
