We have been using Lincolnwood Service for about 40 years and have always had two cars. Bobby Hillard and his son Barry run this shop, and Bobby is a person of decided opinions on how to do business. He will sometimes say, when I bring a car in a panic, that the repair was too trivial to charge us whereas, since neither my wife or I have the faintest notion about how cars work, he could have said it was a major problem and charged us accordingly. The best indicator of his standing in the community is his gas prices which are always considerably higher than other stations (this is perhaps the last full service station in the US). His customers still drive in for gas because they collectively realize that keeping Bobby and Barry in business is in their long-term interest because honest and competent mechanics are few and far between. Moreover, if the repair is something that neither Bobby or Barry feels is within their capacity or expertise they will recommend other people who do that kind of work. Harvard Business School ought to have them as a case study on how to run a small business successfully.
