They've worked on my subaru impreza and on my wifes accura integra on many occasions and it is always easy dealing with them. And like others have said, they talk straight and do as they say they will.

I had the brake pads and rotors on my Hyundai replaced today. The manager and tech were courteous and friendly and the tech was knowledgeable about the brake system. He was aware that special tool is required to get the job done and also explained to me why the rotor replacement on my car takes more time than ordinary rotor replacement. The labor rate is $40/hr. You're not gonna find a rate cheaper than this in Chicago. The reason I'm submitting this although I don't like "Click & Clack" is that some people have biased opinion on chain shops. Another reason why I bother doing this is that for some unknown reason to me this web site is very popular, so I hope these bits of info help people looking for brake shop in North side of Chicago . Anyway, I've never had a bad experience with a franchise store and this one was no exception. Give them a chance, OK?

I've gone to this shop 4 times now over the past two years to care for a dying 1986 5000S. The manager/owner of the place tells it to you like it is-- straight forward estimates, car is finished when he says it will be, and the problem fixed. 1st time: Front struts.. while I was there a random person off the street came in and said their parking brake was stuck on. The manager went out there and fixed it for free in the parking lot!! He estimated the front struts for me and told me that he thought the ball-bearings needed to be repacked too...He came in slightly under his estimate. 2nd Time: Brakes-- break piston. I was driving to work and by the tire hub was incrediable hot. As a result my tire was weakend and blow a tire. One estimate somewhere else-- said nothing was wrong w/ my breaks. Another place estimated $900 to fix calipers, rotors, and piston... Finally had my car towed back downtown to this CarX- and he said it was the break piston, also possibly the hose.. which would come out to $700. He fixed it the next day, said the hose was fine and total was $650. My friend that dropped me off at the shop noticed my muffler moving a lot on the way back, so we went back to the store to ask about it.. and someone welded the bracket that had rusted off the muffler right then and there... for free. :-) 3rd Time: Car wouldn't shift out of first, break fluid leaking and steering fluid leaking. He said the Transmission fluid was leaking a bit and so was low. Said he could fix the steering fluid leak, but would cost around $500 and he that it would be cheaper just to keep monitoring it and adding fluid. Ditto w/ brakes. Didn't cost me a cent, didn't make him any money, and he filled the transmission fluid for free. 4th Time: Radiator would go empty. He said this was the water pump. He couldn't fix it. Also noticed wearing and holes in the front muffler pipe-- said it was a special part and he couldn't fix this either... He said the dealer was really the only place to go-- guessed that the cost would probably be close to $1000 or just under that to fix both of them at the dealer. As a result, I'm car shopping now...but that mechanic has been fantastic, and now I wouldn't take my car anywhere else.

Downtown Chicago is a tough place to find a decent repair shop but for mufflers and brakes this place is better than decent. After an exhaust leak near the manifold of my Pathfinder progressed from sounding kinda boss to outright loud and annoying I went to the Nissan dealer (whom I despise) and inquired as to the cost of a repair. They said that several exhaust components needed replacement and estimated $900--- apparently the cost of repairing anything on that car. Then I went to car-x on Ashland where the guy spotwelded a small hole in the pipe at no charge (a $20 tip seemed appropriate). The repair held for the six years that I owned that vehicle. Subsequent visits for brakes were also convenient, reasonable, and much less mysterious than some shops always seem to make things.

The service at CarX was impeccable. While I tend to look down on big chains like this, they certainly proved me wrong. I had a muffler replaced, and in less time than they estimated, I received a call for the estimate, and an hour later it was finished right on schedule. Having just gone today, I can't vouch for the quality of their work, but I suspect it matches the rest of their service.

My 97 Honda Civic failed the emissions test because the computer returned some trouble codes, and I went to this Car-X to get it chekced out and fixed. It ended up being an electrical problem: the distributor was occasionally dumping current into the car, not into the spark plug where it belongs, causing misfires. They tracked down the problem, and fixed it for a reasonable cost in a short time. The repair also fixed an annoying problem, which was me getting shocked when I left the car after driving. This fact independently confirmed their diagnosis and also made driving a lot more enjoyable since I don't really enjoy electric shocks. I recommend these guys, and will go see them again myself.

Have had mufflers and a few brake jobs done at this shop. Most of the time, it was a good experience. Good price. Wish they used slightly better muffler parts or gave you the option (without having to ask) for a better muffler. But warranty is good. I never had any serious problems w/ this location. This shop is not good to use on a monday, bc workers tend to come in late or have higher absences on Mondays. Overall, it was a good value, as I felt confident going back several times. Is near the bus line and across street from a Starbucks. So that put me in a better mood. ;-)
