The address is Kalona, but actually located in Joetown, near Kalona, only 15 minutes south of Iowa City off of Hwy 1 (turn right at the Cheese Factory). The only reason I didn't answer the question "how well do they respond when they screw something up" is because I've never experienced them screwing anything up. I don't know about a loaner program, haven't needed that option, and no, they aren't near public transportation, --they're out in the sticks, but very easy to get to. Definitely worth the trip. Or the towing fee, if necessary. They specialize in Volkswagens, but I've seen other makes there as well. I wouldn't take my VW anywhere else, my folks take all their VWs there, and they drive a lot more miles to do it. When my parents first moved here they went to the local VW dealer, who diagnosed a problem with a price quote of about $500. Dad called Joetown, got an estimate more in the $350 range, took it there, and they determined the local dealer had diagnosed incorrectly, and fixed the real problem for about $120. They fixed the head gasket on my VW Fox, and even with the cost of having it towed all the way there, it was still over $100 less than the lowest quote I could get in Iowa City. My headlight switch fried, the local dealer quoted me $120, Joetown replaced it for $40 and it was a new part (and they had originally quoted me $65. So I bought a Joetown Garage baseball cap). Everybody around here who knows of Joetown verifies the honesty and good work. These guys deserve a major award.

Exceptional service, honesty and super prices. We have a 1997 Passat that has had numerous problems--door locks, door handles, oxygen sensor, automatic window jams, serpentine belt, muffler, anti-lock break issues, coolant leak, argh!!! I call this car our albatross! Scott is super nice and not patronizing to women. The garage is a bit of a trip from IC but well worth it. Joetown has saved us huge amounts of money (dare II say $1000)--based on estimates we had from the dealer and other in town repairs shops that specialize in German cars. He has also fixed things that others could not or would not. Our back door lock and driver's side door/window/lock weren't working we got a huge estimate from the dealer (over $1000). Scott fixed it all for under $400. Love JOETOWN. The only thing I will miss about owning this car is visiting Joetown.

Joetown garage is absolutely the best. The work on both my 1985 VW Vanagon and my 1996 VW Passat GLX. These are the guys that do the repairs you'd think only the dealer would do. They're honest, competent, and considering they're out in the sticks, they're not that inconvenient--16 miles southwest of Iowa City. Worth imposing on your friends or partner to follow you out for the return trip. No hard sells here, they're not especially fast, but they do the job right and that's what counts in my book.

I love these guys and this shop. Wally & Scott have worked on my toyota truck that has over 250K miles, a newer 4runner, and my plymouth fury. They're great - with the truck they've spent more hours fixing a few obscure problems than they've charged me, and have even towed it for very low cost once when i needed that too. Wally happily gave me a loaner a few times when i needed it (one of his own vehicles). They replaced clutch on my truck for about 1/2 what the estimate was in iowa city. they're flexible about pickup/drop off times, & are honest as you could ever find. Plus friendly, courteous, good humored. It's a multi-generation family shop, a neat little time capsule too with pictures of all sorts of VWs . I've seen a lot of obscure cars there, people trust these guys.

Joetown works on both my Jetta TDI and our Subaru. They do a wonderful job. Anymore it's very hard to find someone you can trust and will expalain things in detail to you and Joetown is both trustworthy and honest.
