I am an auto idiot. Therefore I need a mechanic whom I can totally trust. I feel that these guys have always been honest with me. They let me know if a major repair needs to be done or not. They always explain things (whether I understand them or not is another question). And they are friendly!

These are great guys. The have a mechanic on duty even on Sunday, and they always seem to work me in whenever I have one of those unexpected problems. I've never really seen them screw something up, but I know they would do everything possible to satisfy the customer. A female friend of mine was going to walk across the street to a mall while having her oil changed. Rick, the owner, insisted that he give her a ride because he felt the street was too busy to walk across. Rick had her call on her cell phone when she was done shopping so he could pick her up. I'd say they treat women at least as well as men. There prices are always a bit lower than most, and they only do the work you need.

A visit to this shop is like entering a time warp. This is like your favorite neighborhood shop from the 1950's. They appear to treat all customers in a friendly, sometimes quirky way. On two occasions in the past year I have recommended them to family travelers who were experiencing car trouble. Both times, they evaluated the situation, found nothing to fix or worry about and charged nothing except for the requested tire rotation or only a minimal amount for the diagnosis. I started using them when shopping for tires. They offered the best prices in town for quality tires and I just wouldn't consider going elsewhere again. Highly recommended!

Higgins was recommended to me by a friend who went on-and-on about their professional service, reasonable rates, competence, etc. While it was a fair distance to tow the car from my house to their shop, I decided to give them a shot. Boy, am I glad I did. They diagnosed and fixed the problem the same day they towed it in, within hours! They explained, in careful detail, each item the was causing problems, and included ways to avoid these in the future. Better yet, the bill was half what I was expecting to pay. And, the next day, when the motor threw a timing chain in an unrelated, warranty-covered issue, they towed the car for free, from my home to the dealership, so that it could be repaired for free, since they had just looked at/towed my car the previous day. Higgins Plaza Service is, without a doubt, the best mechanic shop I've ever used in the Des Moines metro area.

They do great work in a professional atmosphere but will give you "shade tree" advice. I was having an issue with headlight system not working and they explained that it could be multi function switch or the BCM or a wire shorting out. They looked at the car and said they could put a toggle switch in to make it work or do a complete check. I now have a toggle switch to turn my lights on. Apparently, they don't own a boat.
