I brought my car in to these guys one day because I heard a little noise in the engine, because the brakes were making a scraping noise when it was cold, and because the rear end made a clicking noise whenever it went over a hard bump. They test drove it and put it up on a lift and looked at it and took it apart and put it back together, all while I was away shopping, and didn't find a thing wrong with it. They explained to me how much life was left on the brakes judging from their examination of them, and that they probably were making more noise than in the summertime because of the cold, and that the flapping noise may be a result of a little engine damage after I let the oil run out one time (which I did indeed do) and that the suspension was in fact wearing down a bit and that was causing it to hit bottom a bit over hard bumps and produce a clicking noise, but that none of it was likely to effect the performance of my car significantly enough to try to fix, nor would any of it cause damage to anything else. The brakes still had about half their lives ahead of them. And after all that, and all the time they spent taking the thing apart, not only did they not try to cheat me (which they could easily have gotten away with since I already thought there was something wrong with the car--replace the brakes, the suspension, open up the engine for further diagnostics, etc...), they didn't charge me a cent. I walked in expecting to delve deeply into our shallow car repair savings, and I walked out of there without paying a penny--how often does that happen in the world of mechanics? And the car has indeed run beautifully ever since. Oh, and it ALWAYS goes to Spenler Tires for routine maintenance--which, by the way, is cheaper than anywhere else I've found (that I would trust) in Iowa City or Coralville. Also, they are never condescending, even when explaining to a girl in torn blue jeans that running out of oil can cause engine damage, but that despite her excessive anxiety there is in fact nothing really wrong with her car, and they always seem happy to see me. Oh, and there's a bucket of candy (or cookies if you come in on a lucky day)open for all.

In the dozen or so times I took my 2 cars in to have various service work done, they were able to do the work and have it back to me the same day, with one exception (waited 1 day for a part to arrive). They were always extremely friendly, honest, and fast. I no longer live in the Iowa City area, and one of the things I miss is being able to count on the kind of great work and service I got from Spenler. The one slightly negative thing I would say is that they didn't always call to let me know what work they were going to do or when they were finished. It was never for a major repair, but even when I asked them to notify me before they did anything, I was surprised to call later that day and find out that the work had already been done. I will say, however, that the cost of the repairs was ALWAYS less than I expected.

I have 2 things to say about this shop. First, Spenler has always fixed the problem the first time. As a comparison, I used to go to a different shop a block away from Spenler and got fed up with them when I had to take my car back 3 times after a brake job and twice after an A/C job. Secondly, I have found Spenlers regular prices to beat most everybody else's sale prices any day of the week. I have not yet had a negative experience at Spenler.

I only have had one bad experience with one of the mechanics, and he was one I've never seen before or since. However, every other time I've been treated great. The repairs costs are reasonable. They do the repairs in a timely fashion.
