In colege, I took my Honda Accord (1984, manual transmission, sedan) to Bob's Standard to have my clutch adjusted. It was engaging too late, and, not knowing how t do the repair myself, I took it in. I dropped off the car late the night before and went down the next afternoon to see how it was. The problem was fixed (just a simple adjustment) easily enough, and when the guy at the register didn't know how much to charge, he looked at Bob and asked, "How much should I charge him?" Bob shrugged and said, "Four bucks." He could have charged me far more and I would have paid it. Just one shining example of the kind of honesty that Bob and his group deliver consistently to their customer, avoiding the easy mark like me.

I found Bob's Standard via your Mechan-X-Files page. Bob is still around, and his son Dave seems to always be available to resolve problems. My sons attend the local college in Decorah and share the use of a car. I spoke with Dave on a Saturday afternoon. The car wouldn't start and Dave offered several possible problems. I told him if the costs did not exceed $200.00, just fix it without calling me. I know this is generally an open invitation to find $200 worth of repairs. The car was finished the following Monday and the cost??? Less than $11 to clean up a corroded wire. That's right, no zeros and no commas. I believe the cost of this repair was directly related to the lack of navigable waters in the Decorah area!

I'd like to concur with the positive comments above. Bob's is fair-price, honest, pretty efficient, and good with older cars, too. He kept me rolling when I was in Decorah, and every mechanic I encounter, I compare against his "Standard."

I've had the Hyundai Elantra in three times. In rural Iowa, it's hard to find shops that do foreign cars. Jeff has helped each time. One time, the estimate was $200 and came back at $39. Honest, fair, prompt, and thorough.
