A year two ago, your column ran an inquiry about the torque- converter lock-up on a 1988 Olds Ciera failing to release. You advised two cures: (1) unplug the wire, and (2) spend a few thousand to actually repair the problem. A year before that, I had taken my '87 Ciera with identical symptoms to Garth at Complete Automotive. He never mentioned the costly cure. He just said, when it gets frequent enough, bring it in and I'll unplug the wire. One time I went in about 3:30 p.m. with a leaky water pump on that same Olds and asked him when he could get to it, intending to make an appointment. He said that if he could get a pump, he would fix it that day... and he did, working until after 7 p.m. when the shop closes at 5. No extra charge. The shop is very busy with a lot of custom restoration work for dealers and owners all around the Cedar Rapids area.
