Car Tech guys have been working on my cars for over 10 years. They DO remember who I am, what I drive, what they fixed lately, and what needs to be fixed pretty soon. Even with basic oil change they check other important pieces and inform me if something needs my attention, especially if it is a safety issue. I do refer my friends to use their shop, although I don't get any kick-backs. Andy

The owners of Car Tech (Tom Thomas and Chuck Ellingson)bought this shop in the early 1980's, after having worked there while attending Iowa State University. They got out of the gasoline business around 1985, and have focused on the repair business ever since. They are located in downtown Ames, right across from the Post Office. When our daughters turned 16 we had them take one of the familiy cars to Car Tech and watch while Tom/Chuck (or their trusty assistant, young Dan) changed the oil, checked fluid levels, etc. The girls also brought donuts for the guys. This was a great experience for our girls as they got to see what was needed to care for a car.

These guys are terrific when you have an older car--they tell you if it is a necessary repair or if it is something to watch or something you can dispense with. We have used them for our Taurus, Plymouth Voyager and Toyota Corollas for 19 years. They tell you what is wrong, or if they are not sure, they discuss with you the strategy they would propose to test for the problem. They drive me to work when I need to drop the car off.

They have been working on my and my families cars since I was in High School and drving a 15 year old Carolla. They have kept several cars running long after they (the car) should have been regulated to the junk heap. They are extremly busy but when I am finally able to get my car in they always have provided great customer service. Dan, the new guy (he's only been there 10 years) once saved me about $600 by noticing a tiny oil leak just before my Saturn went out of warrenty. He told me about it and told me to have Saturn fix it under warrenty. Talk about Honest. He could of just as easily waited till the next time a brought it in and then fixed it and charged me an arm and a leg. Whenever some one asks me if I know a good mechanic I always tell them about Car Tech, I say they are probably NOT the best mechanics in Ames but they just might be the MOST HONEST. -matt

They want to do the best job and they tell you when a job can be done cheap, or when the job can be done right. They are probably more expensive than one of the chain repair shops because they do a complete job. I have been going there for at least 15 years and have yet to find anything wrong with the service. They also keep up with new ideas and with current tech bulletins. They will also tell you when they think a repair job is under warranty and that the car should be taken to the dealer. They have done this for me a number of times and have saved me money. The owner is very capable and his 2 mechanics are good but still "wet behind the ears", but they know when to ask for help.
