I found Tropic Auto through Car Talk's "Mechan X-files" after I moved to Melbourne in 2002. Since that time I've taken mine, my wife's and both of my daughters cars to him. Pat has always fixed the problem the first time and at a very reasonable cost. Most recently, my daughter took her 2000 Celica to the Toyota dealer for an oil change and to check a small oil leak. Toyota looked at it and...Oh no....oil was leaking from the cylinder head, to the tune of $2,500 for repair. I called Pat and he asked to look at the car. He found a bad engine front housing seal, not a leaking cylinder head. He fixed it and replaced the leaking water pump for $550 - and if you've ever seen how Toyota wedges the Celica engine into the engine compartment, it was worth every penny. My daughter's been driving her car for 4 weeks now and not a drop of oil on the ground. The only drawback is that Tropic is a small owner-owned shop and Pat is often swamped with customers because he is such a fine and trustworthy mechanic - but it is worth the occasional wait. With my daughter's car, he worked Saturday to finish it.
