I took my Hyundai Accent in to the Local Dealer for a check engine light and rough idling, and after 6 hours was told the vehicle would need over $1200 in repairs and maintenance which would take 2 days to complete, (note, this was a running vehicle that just needed a tune up). I told them to put it back together and I'd take it elsewhere. We called around a few places and got a hold of John at the Texaco. He gave me a rough estimate over the phone and laughed himself when he heard the Hyundai estimate. The short story is, I pulled in, John came out to meet me right away. He went over what needed to be done with me, and showed me what was going on and why during the whole process. The other techs there also threw in some tidbits of advice for the vehicle's maintenance while the car was worked on. All in all, it took 2 hours to do a full oil change, tune up, transmission flush, replace the front brakes for $340. The only thing they couldn't do was the timing belt because they admitted they didn't have the experience on the model to do the job right. A price comparison follows: Job Hyundai Texaco Battery service 34.95 5.00 Tune Up 134.95 88.00 Trans Flush 189.95 99.99 Front brakes 249.95 65.00 Timing belt 499.95 N/A* Oil Change (inc filter) Too irritated to ask 24.99 Numbers speak for themselves, and now that I know how to do some of the repairs, I can save a few more bucks down the road. *John did recommend a location I can check Monday for this.
