I am 49 years old living in Meriden, CT. I've only had three mechanics in my driving life. One in New York growing up, and Nelson's is my second since moving to CT in 1984. After 17 years with the most honest and competent mechanic I had ever known, he retired suddenly, leaving me in need of an honest mechanic who specialized in Saabs but could service anything I owned. I utilize a dealer for the rare new car purchase until they come off warranty, but basically my mechanic gets all of my work except tire purchase. I thought I would struggle to find a new mechanic interested in a long term relationship. A stroke of luck led me to Nelson's Automotive just off I-91 in Wallingford. The shop was in a "classic" three bay gas station in a residential area. Tiny office, slightly disheveled, and the typical sights and smells that took me back to my teen years hanging around my buddy's station on Long Island. Pete Nelson is a "five tool player" in the Automotive world. He knows his stuff, he's fair, he's honest, he's realistic, and he's just a nice guy who will always give you time and an explanation if you want it. They have just relocated to a larger space in an industrial park and feature three lifts, including a drive on that also does alignments. He has a stand-alone emissions test area and gets people in and out quick for state required emissions testing without mucking up the service customers. He has a christmas party every year and invites customers, and is fair and reasonable in his pricing and fees. I have a 2000 Saab 95 wagon with 165K and Pete knows his way around Saab's as well as my last mechanic (a Saab nut with six or seven of his own Saabs)which is more than almost anyone on earth! His son, Pete Jr. works in the shop and specilizes in Subarus as well. My 2007 F-150 just came off warranty and Pete will be doing his first LOF and Tire Rotation on my truck after dealer only service for the first 40K. Nelson's Automotive also provides loaners which makes it VERY convenient for my wife and I since we work in opposite directions. Nelson't is a comfortable place to be now that his lobby is expanded and now boasts carpet AND a flat screen TV! They went from the 70's to the present in one move. I can assure you that after seventeen years with one mechanic, I was skeptical of ever having another "Great Mechanic" in my life. I even considered that I'd stick with the Ford dealer for my truck. Well, that's changed and I look forward to many years of trouble free motoring thanks to Pete. Having a great mechanic is a like finding a rare gem. In this case, I get the competence that I always had, with the added benefit of patronizing a truly nice guy's business in my local area. I give Nelson's Automotive Service Center a HUGE thumbs up, and would recommend them and would recommend them highly for all of your repair and maintenance needs. Pete says that the larger facility will allow him to sell used cars soon, and that works well for me because my son turned 21 and he's driving my Saab right now. Commuting daily in my F-150 is comfy, but pricey, and I want my Saab back! Pete probably wants it back too. Since my son took it to school, his business has dropped off. Those Saab's are a little like beautiful women...a little high maintenance. For that reason alone, it's nice to have a guy like Pete Nelson to rely on. He takes good care of my wallet too.
