It was unreliable, as I already stated, but sometimes it would start right up and purr. On those days (usually sunny days) the car was capable of flying. I was actually stopped by a HP officer for speeding on one of these days and he said, "Lady, what kind of car is this?! It looks like it's going to fall apart so slow down! Do you know how fast you're were going?" My response was to sob, "I don't know, the speedometer won't work! Most of the time, the car won't work! I'm really crying at this point, so he takes pity upon me and admonishes me to drive slower and tells me that I need to reapply duct tape to the bumper. The car was literally held together with duct tape and prayer. |

What happened to my old comments that I posted about this car back in 2000? This car is awesome. That's all there is to it. Like the Yugo, it got a lot of undeserved bad press. How can it go from Motor Trend Car of the Year to "Heap O' Junk" in a little over a year? It's not the car's fault. My car never gave me any trouble. You had to maintain it, of course. But it also had that Gallic flair and it handles like a dream, very quick and responsive. Okay, so it's not going to burn up today's 75 mph speed limit, but at the time it was made, the speed limit was 55, and it could go 85 if you floored it and waited a while. But hey, 40 m.p.g. back in 1985? They still act like 40 mpg is some unachievable Holy Grail. The car has a timing chain, limited slip differential, torsion bars and other goodies that made this car so much better technologically than its competitors. Plus, it looked fabulous. I wish Renault would come back. I'd buy a new one in a heartbeat. |

I had a CV joint fail at about 25K miles. Expensive to replace.
Few mechanics wanted to work on it. No dealer support.
At less than 50K miles timing belt broke and destroyed the engine. Nobody even had tools to take engine apart to fix. Dealer couldn't help either. Ended up having to abandon car as it spent over three months awaiting repair. |

Parts are getting tough to find, even in the junkyard. |
