I have known the original owner "Smitty" for over nine years. He started the business in 1951. His son worked there and now his grandsons (Dave, Sean and Mark) are the principal mechanics there. This makes it a third generation business. They are a full service station and offer emergency work on Sundays. They maintain the Norwalk hospital ambulances. They also have a full compliment of tow trucks: a Ford, Dodge and Chevrolet. They have always been straight forward with me and great at diagnosing problems. Sometimes with minor work they don't even charge me. They take pride in there work. Many of there customers have been using them for life. They never do unecessary work and they try to give you options when they exist. I gladly recommend them to friends, my mom, her friends or any of my coworkers. There is always a lot of activity there with customers and a comradery among the workers. Its a fun place to hang out too. A good friend of mine goes there every Sunday morning. The original owner "Smitty" holds court there on Sundays with many of his regular customers. This is the kind of place that defines Yankee pride and ingenuity.

I found Smitty's Shell about ten years ago when the car (Toyota) I was about to sell started sounding like a wheel would come off everytime I hit a bump going over 50moh. They put it up on a lift and tightened a bolt -- for $5 -- and it fixed the problem, I sold the car to a work colleague who never complained about the car after he bought it!!

I had not been happy with the very over-priced and sometimes sub-standard service from my local shop at Old Greenwich, so I looked up the Mechan-X Files and found Smitty's Shell Service. I called and spoke to Mark about my car trouble and right away I had a feeling that I found an honest mechanic (because he stuck to my problem and didn't try to sell me 100 other things simply because I was a woman). Their service was excellent and the final price actually came below the quote (which I don't remember ever happening at the Old Greenwich shop!). In addition, they also did a few minor things free of charge. I am indeed very pleased with their professionalism and would recommend this shop any day.

You can always rely on Smitty's to give you honest, professional, and competent service and advice at a fair price. They offer old fashioned reliable service that is very hard to find today.

I have been living in Connecticut for over three years and have never found a mechanic I trust until now. After my check engine light came on, I stupidly took my car to a Midas. They quoted over $700 in work that needed to be done and charged me $100 just to run the test on it. After researching on Car Talk's website, I came upon Smitty's. They are open from 6am to 11pm Monday through Saturday and open until 3pm on Saturdays, so you can't beat their hours. They were very nice to me, explained everything that needed to be done, and gave me a quote that was $400 less than Midas and the testing was free! They even fixed a slight rattle I had without asking for it and free of charge! Couldn't ask for a better experience and I will most definitely go there again!
