#1445: Tommy, Riposa in Pace
This week on Car Talk, we pay tribute to our beloved brother, friend, and co-host, Tom Magliozzi, who passed away Monday, November 3rd. You’ll hear many of our favorite moments featuring Tom the consummate radio professional, Tom the philosopher king, Tom the storyteller, and ultimately Tom, the guy who enjoyed nothing more than to sit with his brother and all of you listeners for an hour a week, laughing his butt off. This special edition of the show will be hosted by Ray. We’ll be listening, and we hope you will, too.

#1201: 20 Miles Per Wood Chip
This week on Car Talk, Hans recalls fleeing from Germany during World War II in a car powered by woodchips, but he's never been able to figure out exactly how it worked. So who better than two car experts with MIT degrees to figure this out? Well, maybe anyone would be better in this case. Tom and Ray will likely do better helping David figure out how a three-pound bag of Hershey Kisses disappeared from his Civic overnight, and why his car now smells of melted chocolate. Elsewhere, Victoria's Mom needs to trade in her Corvette after surgery, so Victoria's wondering what car's right for a hip Mom with a new hip; Aaron's windshield wipers are stuck in a salute position; and, is Mary-Ellen wearing out her brakes parking in "The Gulch" every day? A box of doughnuts is riding on the answer, so this is serious business. All this and lots more, this week, on Car Talk.

#1044: The Mysterious Man in White
This week on Car Talk, we've got a roadside repair story to beat the band. It involves a dead Camry, a remote mountain top, and a mysterious stranger, clad in white from head to hubcap, who did nothing more than say, "Just start the car." Meanwhile, Jenny in California wonders if over-revving an engine can cook a catalytic converter, and if not, should the accusation destroy a relationship? Also, a Grand Cherokee develops a bad case of flatulence; a '58 Lincoln with a brake pedal problem prompts some thoughts on Tommy's wardrobe; and, how much do you owe a friend who spent a few hundred bucks trying to fix your car... but succeeded instead in setting it on fire? All this, and lots more, this week on Car Talk.

#1210: The Mothership Has Landed
This week on Car Talk, we revisit a caller's unexplained electrifying vehicular event. Was it an atmospheric abnormality? A UFO? Beam 'em up, Scotty! Then it's warp speed to Georgia where Caroline has another curious conundrum: has a car alarm mysteriously installed itself on her Saturn? Elsewhere, Libby is looking for the perfect car to run away in, and Bob is in dire need of marriage advice. Could the turn signal hold the answer to marital bliss? All that, plus a new tantalizing puzzler from our "Travel and Leisure" series, this week, on Car Talk.

#0719: Hello, You're on Mom Talk: A Mother's Day special, featuring Elizabeth Magliozzi
This week on Car Talk, we dig into the archives for an all-time classic salute to Mother's Day, featuring your hosts Tom, Ray-- and their mom, Elizabeth. That's right: there's a third microphone in the studio this week, and that means no shortage of tales from Tom and Ray's childhood, plenty of (unwanted!) maternal advice, and several moments of poor Elizabeth just wondering where she went wrong. And yes, Tom, Ray and Elizabeth do answer car questions! For example, Sandy from Prescott, Arizona gets helpful advice on why her car is imitating Felix from "The Odd Couple," and possible responses to her kids' constant query, "Are we there yet?" Then, hear what happens when Mom's pastor listens to Car Talk. (Hint: it's not pretty.) Other calls include Jim, who's trying to force his Mom to learn to drive, and Trish, who's wondering if it's time to get her Mom out from behind the wheel. We've also got a few motherly cameos. Our producer's mom checks in on her not-so-very-in-touch son, and Susan Stamberg probes Elizabeth for the dirt on Tom and Ray as kids. When did they start taking things apart that they didn't know how to put back together? But, the toughest question of the day comes from Linda in Kansas: Which child was Mama Magliozzi's favorite? It's putting it mildly to say Elizabeth's answer catches Tommy a bit off guard. All that-- and one of the funniest moments in Car Talk history (hint: it rhymes with lipstick)-- on this week's Mother's Day edition of Car Talk.

#0851: No Flaming Golf Balls Just Yet!
This week, a 3-year old, a Toyota Highlander and a golf ball converge. The result? A nervous dad, asking Tom and Ray if the Titleist up his muffler is doing any damage. The answer may ease his worries-- and give his kid a few new ideas. Also, get ready to launch your hate mail--with gas prices dropping, Ray is renewing his call for a national gas tax, including a new idea for who can reinvent themselves as train manufacturers. Plus, a blower motor performs a Lazarus, an Element hosts an all-mouse production of La Boheme, and, how not to keep your loved one from flying through the windshield. All this, plus a puzzler from the Geography series, this week on Car Talk.

#1004: The $30,000 Paperweight
This week on Car Talk, a winter driving tip from Katie in Boulder: don't leave your Mini parked in a four-inch deep puddle, unless you want to find it encased in four inches of ice, up to its rims. The question now is, can Tom and Ray stop laughing long enough to help her figure out a way to extricate it? Also, a water pump replacement turns into a scavenger hunt in the engine of a '96 Civic; an unfortunate oyster shucking incident somehow leads to a new noise in a Ford Escort; and the condition of the seats may be what determines if it's worth putting a new transmission in a '93 Volvo. All this, plus a new puzzler from Ray's Uncharted Waters series, and more, this week on Car Talk.

#1033: A Huge Bag of Crab
This week on Car Talk, yes that is a "b" at the end of "Crab," but a "p" might better describe the smell pervading Annette's Mercedes after she left a bag of giant king crabs in the car overnight. Can Tom and Ray help her find a way to get rid of the stench that doesn't involve a match? Meanwhile, Frank from Los Angeles has been losing sleep for a few decades, wondering what caused the car he was towing 25 years ago to explode and burst into flames. Also, bride-to-be Kelli learns that a toilet brush may be her best weapon to get her fiance to stop cooking her Accord's engine; and we get the inside scoop on Ray's latest million dollar idea--the plainclothes salesman. All this and more, this week on Car Talk.

#1050: Tommy's Knee and Jack's MGB
This week on Car Talk, the truth is a lot funnier than Tommy's memory, as we discover what really happened on a fateful ski trip 40 years ago. Elsewhere, the truth may set Jack in Houston free--of his marriage--when his wife finds out that he didn't dump the 1970 MG that was rusting away in their driveway. Also, cold weather brings out the worst in two cars -- Diana's Subaru stinks, and Naomi's Chrysler cries like a baby. And, on Stump the Chumps, we find out if Adam pulled off the Great Jeep Repair of 2010 before his girlfriend left him by the side of the road. All that, plus a new Puzzler from the Law Enforcement series, this week on Car Talk.

#1128: Double-Dog Daylight Savings
This week on Car Talk, Ray's quest for more "usable" sunshine leads him to a proposal both brilliant and wacko: Double-Dog Daylight Savings, probably not coming to a time zone near you. Then, Davis' squeaky Durango sparks another novel idea: if you don't know where a squeak is coming from, just dip the whole car in silicone spray. Elsewhere, Sarah's got an exploding rear windshield, Ben can't shift his Accord into Park, and Natalie's trying to convince her husband that spending lunch hour in his car listening to sports talk radio is a bad idea. Finally, Chris is looking for a suitable prank to get back at the guys who left a dead fish in his truck. Fortunately for Chris, our hosts might just have a few ideas. All this and lots more, this week on Car Talk.

#1235: A Truck By Any Other Name
This week on Car Talk, Robert is a "Car Namer." More specifically, he's always given his vehicles female monikers. So imagine his shock when he learned that his truck's previous owner had already named it... Mark! Can Robert change his truck's name (and gender!) without giving it an identity crisis? Then we dig into the Department of Odd Noises. Elisha's Honda is making a sound she describes as "a mouse wearing stilettos, doing a tap dance on a marble floor." And, Maureen's looking for a way to compensate her mechanic who suffered head injuries while working on her car. Can baked goods make him forget about a permanently damaged forehead? #1112: The Bowling Ball Incident
This week on Car Talk, driving over a bowling ball is not good for your car, but it sure makes for a great story, especially when it happens in front of a topless bar. Also, Kat in San Diego is wondering why she's going through brakes faster than Tommy goes through wives; Sid's Volvo has begun speaking Greek to him; and Jeff in Ohio thinks his Corsica may be trying to tell him something by conking out when his fiancee takes it to the bridal shop. All this, the early returns on our pseudo-scientific survey on the Male-Female Heated Seat Dichotomy, and lots more, this week on Car Talk.

#1016: My Own Brother! My Own Son!
This week on Car Talk, absence makes the heart grow more devious, as illness forces Ray to miss a trip South. Loving brother Tom gets an unique opportunity to deliver on his promise not to let Ray out of his thoughts with the perfect memento, courtesy of his accomplice, Ray's son Drew. Familial relations are also on the table in Michigan, where Heidi is looking for a gentle way to discourage her non-English speaking, tennis pro husband from trying to change the timing belt on their Volvo, and in Oregon, where Peter's about to get in deep doo-doo with his mother-in-law. Also, does stressing over the long-term health of your mid-life-crisis convertible's hood negate its mid-life-crisis curative powers? And, the burning question of the week--is knitting in the front seat a bad idea? All this and more, on this week's encore edition of Car Talk.

#0930: Bernsteining the Clutch
On this week's encore edition of Car Talk, the son of music legend Leonard Bernstein earns his own place in history...at least when it comes to "somewhat wacko but probably harmless driving techniques." Also, a voice from Tommy's past seeks help with a check engine light that's been on for a mere 75,000 miles or so. Meanwhile, Julie in Washington wonders whether she should 'fess up to her husband about the fender bender she had with a "car that wasn't there." And, Sara in Ohio poses a new twist to an age old question, when she asks, "Why did the chicken go for a ride?" All this, plus a few slightly disturbing quotes for your next elevator ride, this week on Car Talk.

#1304: How to Lose a Pinewood Derby
This week on Car Talk, Kathy is "helping" her son build his Pinewood Derby race car, and is looking for a few design tips. Can two MIT grads-- one of whom failed Physics twice-- lead her to Victory Row, or is this Cub Scout Den Mother barking up the wrong radio show? Elsewhere, Sophie thinks her Saab is laughing at her, and not just because it's delighted by her French accent; Ainsley's husband won't let her take her Honda to the car wash because he's worried it'll melt the Epoxy that's holding the car together; and Richard won Employee of the Month by driving 95 mph to deliver his boss' passport to the airport. But, will he be forced to sell his plaque to fix the problems that have plagued his Jeep ever since? And, our Historic, Folkloric Question of the Week comes from Julie: why do we drive on the right, if we're a former British colony? All this, and lots more, this week on Car Talk.

Can Tom and Ray convince her dad to buy her a new car, or is this family reunion doomed? Meanwhile, Jose's car fell off the jack while he was changing a tire. #1048: Throw Your Keys Down the Drain
This week on Car Talk, here's a new complaint for you: "My car is getting too many miles per gallon." Ephraim's fuel mileage doubled, right after he got engaged to be married, and he's wondering if it's a coincidence or if his fiancee has magical mileage enhancement powers. Meanwhile, the holidays mean more family gatherings, which mean more family arguments over cars. Al and his brother are sparring over whether it's possible to park a car so that you can't get out the way you got in; and, Sharon and her husband can't agree on whether it's safe to put a wreath on the front of her car. Also, a quest for heated seats, and if a Brigadier General wants to go 140 mph in a Crown Vic, who are we to stop him? All that and lots more on this week's Car Talk.

#1008: People Like to Listen to Idiots
Is there any group more qualified to critique Car Talk than 8th graders, assuming kindergartners aren't available? This week, we kick off the show with a few astute comments from kids. Then it's off to Ohio where Kellie's Accord is "bogging out" on the highway, and her dad's wallet is emptying out trying to fix the problem. Meanwhile, in Princeton, New Jersey, Professor Robert is trying to decide whether to open his wallet for a new timing belt, or risk a quick stop in the left lane of the New Jersey Turnpike. Also, on Stump the Chumps, Nariv confronts his neighbor and doesn't get a black eye. And, Ray confesses to an embarrassing incident at the garage, which half of Our Fair City already knew about. #1329: Let Sleeping Civics Lie
This week on Car Talk, all was well with Karen's Honda until her boyfriend gave it a tune-up-- which promptly turned on the Check Engine light. We'll just skip past the question of whether he messed up, and go right to trying to figure out what he messed up. Elsewhere in Civic-land, Anna came out of work one day to discover an unwanted passenger in her car: a white rat. How did it get there, and how can she ever go near her car again? Also, our Physicist-on-Call Wolfgang checks in to help clarify, and de-bogusify, Ray's "dispersion" theory on the odd behavior of a keyless remote; and is Lara's starting problem really caused by her turning the key too fast? All this, and lots more, this week on Car Talk.

This week on Car Talk, a nasty divorce takes a nastier turn for Myrna in New Jersey. Word has it, her husband put a tracking device on her car, and she wants to get rid of it. Tom and Ray, on the other hand, think she's got the perfect opportunity to have a little fun with her soon-to-be-ex. Her dilemma and their scheme is also our Call of the Week. Meanwhile, in New Hampshire, 13-year old budding shade tree mechanic Thomas is looking for help convincing his Mom that the Nissan he's working on now will be safe to drive in 2011. Elsewhere, on Stump the Chumps, we find out if Ray's "spontaneous starting" theory was really what caused a Porsche to head cliff-ward. And, what's the best way to track down a fuel leak, other than the "match test"? All this, plus a listener review of "As the Wrench Turns," and lots more, this week on Car Talk.

#1328: Dispersion via Dave's Chin
This week on Car Talk, Dave has discovered an electrical anomaly: his Audi's keyless remote works better when he points it at his chin rather than his car. Fortunately, he's come to the right place…for a completely bogus explanation. Elsewhere, Brett's Camry is giving him enough electrical shocks to turn him into a walking Van de Graaff Generator; Spencer learned why you should never touch your lug nuts in public on a hot day; and Beth's Accord is exhibiting all the symptoms of a bad clutch, with just one problem: it's an automatic. Also, in a follow-up to last week's show, we hear from Tracy, whose girlfriend's parents offered to buy them a car if they got married. Did he get the girl, and the Lexus to boot? Other pupils in the show include Jason, who wants to know if his wife's theory on gas mileage is totally wacko, and Tiffany, who awaits the Grand Tappet Jury's verdict on whether she destroyed two of her boyfriend's trucks in one day. He's wondering if this is just a design quirk to make the car feel more outdoors-y, or if there's an actual problem--and can said problem be fixed with anything other than duct tape or rope? Elsewhere, Patricia loves her Rambler-- except for the calling card of black soot it leaves in every parking space; Jamie's suffering an epidemic of escaping spark plugs; and, after a "low smoke" at-home alternator replacement, Helen's oil light is flashing a little too much for comfort. Happily, there won't be any hands-on experiments, so the chance of a studio fire is remote. Elsewhere, Mary Lou in DC is wondering why her car smells like it just left the pancake house; Rick in Michigan thinks he's got a coffee grinder under the hood; and Lynn in South Carolina wants to know how to kill the three junkers her husband's making her drive. Anyone out there looking for a time machine? Have we got a deal for you! Meanwhile, our Call of the Week features John in Colorado, who's bonded with his dad in frustration over how to get the CV joint off his obstinate Civic. Is such a problem even possible for a Tercel? Elsewhere, Mary's been driving her Mustang around with a trunk full of compost.
