Ever wonder what really goes on, when you bring your car into service?
Good news! The Car Talk Service Advisor is here with some answers.
To the right, you'll find some of the most common service items, with full explanations of what's really involved, whether it's really necessary ... even whether you can do it yourself.
With a little luck, you just might save yourself a boat payment ... and keep that showcase of automotive brilliance in your driveway running for years to come, too.

Could you recommend a good mechanic located between Central and Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA? I am a senior (female) and need to find a new mechanic because the one I used for several years sold me four cheap tires (the owner had passed away and the person managing it sold the tires). The right left tire blew while driving on a highway and I had to replace it and the other front tire. Cannot afford to replace the back tires yet as I am unemployed. Right now I need a service and do not know where to go.

I own a 2005 Ford F150 pickup. My brake light stays on all the time. I bleed the brakes, changed the brake callibur and the light is still on.

My 2007, Toyota, Highlander Hybrid has started to occasionally not go to the "READY" to get it started. I have to keep trying for one to three minutes before it will show "READY". What could be the problem?
