Puzzler Answer, 7/4/98: What A Deal!
RAY: Here's the answer to last week's puzzler.
TOM: You can't give the answer until you tell us the question.
RAY: Well, I'm going to give you the -- I always give the question.
TOM: Oh, OK.
RAY: I give the question, and --
TOM: And then the answer.
RAY: How long you've been here? Here it is. It was brief. It was really quick. I mean it was
beautiful because it was succinct, to the point, it was interesting, and it just had all the elements
of a great puzzler, I thought.
TOM: Yeah. Go on. Just give me the first couple of words and I'll know it.
RAY: A man. Goes.
TOM: Goes to a hardware store.
RAY: To purchase something for his house.
TOM: I'm proud of myself.
RAY: You peeked.
TOM: I didn't.
RAY: He asked the clerk, "How much is one?" The clerk says, "60 cents." The guy says, "OK. How
bout twelve?" The clerk says, "Well, a dollar twenty." The guys says, "OK, in that case I'll take
200." And the clerk says, "That'll be a dollar eighty." So what's he buying. So one costs 60 cents.
Twelve costs a $1.20, and he got 200 for a $1.80.
TOM: The quality must have gone down though.
RAY: Well, he's getting a quantity discount.
TOM: You talk about quantity discounts. That's a quantity discount.
RAY: Pretty good, huh. We could have gotten 900 for a $1.80. Or 999.
TOM: But not a thousand.
RAY: But not a thousand. That's right. So what he was buying was house numbers. And who's our
winner this week, Tommy?
TOM: Wow, that's a good one. I mean there are millions of high school and grammar school students at
this moment saying how come I didn't get that. Or they're saying those guys are jerks. And the
winner, and one of the people who said we were jerks, is Dianne Weaver from Houston, Texas.
