Puzzler Answer, 2/14/98: Frank's Party of Five

RAY: Hi, we're back. You're listening to Car Talk with us, Click and Clack, the Tappett Brothers, and as promised, here is the answer to last week's puzzler.

TOM: Well, first, what was the question.

RAY: Well, I'm going to give -- I usually give the question, and then I give the answer. Like I said I know you are not going to like this, but I am going to have to convince you that you are going to have to like it because...

TOM: OK.

RAY: Do you remember my neighbor, Frank?

TOM: Yes.

RAY: He says to me one day you know I have five children, and half of them are boys. I said I will get right back to you.

TOM: And your question was very brief. How can that be?

RAY: How can that be?

TOM: I have five children, and half of them are boys.

RAY: Now people immediately start thinking about dogs, cats, canaries, and the like. They figured somehow or other he is you know ??.

TOM: Five children.

RAY: I mean how can you have -- how can half -- how can you have five and then half, right? Does he have half a boy?

TOM: I don't know.

RAY: Well, he does.

TOM: Oh.

RAY: And it would be correct to say that ten percent of them are boys. Sixty percent of them are boys, and a hundred percent of them are boys. Therefore...

TOM: They're all boys.

RAY: They're all boys. Half of them are boys. Are they not?

TOM: I don't like it.

RAY: I knew you wouldn't.

TOM: I don't.

RAY: But our winner liked it. Who's our winner?

TOM: Well, I'm not going to send this person anything. The winner is Barbara Beck from The Cats in California, Los Gattos, California, and for having her correct answer chosen at random from among all the right answers we got, you're not going to get anything Barbara because that was a stupid puzzler, and if you got the answer right, you are not going to get one of our great tenth anniversary Car Talk T-shirt.

RAY: It is not a stupid puzzler. Let's have a show of groans. Let's have a show of groans from the studio.

TOM: Everybody! Everybody -- the whole studio audience, both of them.

RAY: Aw, all right.

TOM: I think -- OK, but what we will send you Barbara is a T-shirt that says Celebrating Ten Years of Bad Puzzlers.
