My 88 Olds Calais with 162,000 miles had developed a transmission problem. If driven over 45mph, the trans would lock in high gear and stall at the first stop light. If allowed to cool for 15 to 20 minutes, it was OK again. We were using it only for trips to the super and such in town while looking for a fix. Everybody we took it to wanted to do a rebuild for a couple thousand. Ivey's told me it just needed a new solenoid and some modification. They also fixed an annoying growl in the front end by replacing a front wheel bearing, flushed the cooling system, serviced the engine and did a tune-up, all for $615, and it runs great. They warned me about an oil seal that was leaking a little, but that can wait a while. Ivey's is a nice, clean place and they do great work with the latest equipment. Swepsonville is about 10 miles south of Burlington on NC 54, telephone 336-578-4100.

After being dismissed by my dealer and getting a "Duh' when I described my problem--succintly and accurately--CarTalk gave me an accurate diagnosis and furnished the address for Ivey's Automotive. Although these guys didn't know about being listed here and haven't heard the program, they arrived at the same diagnosis by putting my car on the lift. This is something no one else had done, including having my tires balanced and rotated. NO ONE had looked behind the rear wheels when I described the noises. The men at Ivey's are competent and confident, as well as communicative. After a setback--the ordered new axle did not fit--they found a used one. They had me running in 30 minutes. Ivey's is my repair shop from now on.
