Frank asks the time-old question: What makes a good Minivan?
About two weeks ago, you wrote an article that continued to praise the line of Chrysler minivans. I'm sure both of you are now acquainted with the Consumer Reports article in February which slams Chrysler's A-604 transmission. I was just wondering if, in spite of that report, you still hold the Chrysler minivans in such high regard? I bought a brand new 1991 Plymouth Voyager just before the CU article came out, and now I don't know what to think. I would appreciate your comments and opinions.
RAY: When you consider what makes a great minivan, Frank, you think about how much room it has, how the interior is laid out, how it drives and handles, and how well it holds up over time. And when you put all that stuff together, Chrysler still comes out on top.
TOM: They clearly screwed up something in this transmission. They say they've corrected the problem, and that may very well be true. It's too early for us to know for certain.
RAY: But more importantly, Chrysler has assured its customers that it will fix or replace any A-604 transmission that proves to be defective. And since minivan sales are absolutely crucial to Chrysler's existence, it's a good bet that this is a promise they're going to keep. So I don't think you really have anything to worry about, Frank.
TOM: Any company can make a mistake in engineering or design of a new product. What you want to know is whether the company will then do whatever is necessary to make you happy. And as long as we see Chrysler repairing or replacing these transmissions with no ifs, ands, buts, shrugs, or deductibles, we'll continue to recommend their great line of minivans.
