How to Melt All the Ice Cream at a Dairy Queen
Submitted by Camille Joseph

A couple of years ago I decided to return home to New York after living in San Francisco and decided to take my father along to have one of those bonding trips. I flew him out and we packed up my ‘88 VW Golf, Betty.

Everything went pretty well until we hit Kansas. My father was driving and saw a sign for $1.00 sundaes at Dairy Queen, which was too good to pass up. Because there was no way I was going to feed him while he drove, I took the wheel even though it was late and I was exhausted. I put Betty in reverse, backed up and "Boom"! I backed up alongside an electrical pole and onto the fuse box on the ground.

I was stuck. People started coming out of the Dairy Queen with strange looks. We shorted out the Dairy Queen! All power gone. We had to get my car away from the pole. Fortunately, six nice Kansas guys came out and got my car away from the pole and box. I went into the Dairy Queen and apologized and asked what we should do. The girl behind the counter said that we should wait for the manager so I went back outside to get a bite of that sundae before it melted.

Well, no one came to talk to us, so we hit the road. About 20 minutes later, we got pulled over by a police officer and taken to the local jail where we were interrogated for a couple of hours and almost arrested for fleeing the scene of a crime! We were only allowed to leave after it was decided that depending on the outcome of the police investigation, we could be sent a ticket for a large fine. We made it home to New York with no mishaps after that, except for a couple of times I threatened to take my father to the nearest airport because he was driving me crazy.

By the way, we never received that ticket!
