Way back in the Pleistocene era, when Car Talk was just getting started, we thought it would be fun to play excerpts from car songs around our station breaks. We figured we'd run out of songs in about 10 weeks, but since we expected the show to be canceled in nine weeks, we didn't worry about it.
So it's a bit of a surprise that here we are, several decades later, still playing different car songs every week. And what have we learned? That there's a lot more to car songs than The Beach Boys and The Rip Chords. We've discovered a treasure trove of American songs about cars. And you know what? Most of them see cars the same way we do; as pains in the tuchus.
So, as the world's foremost authorities on disrespectful car music, we hereby present our third compilation of such tunes. We'd like to personally thank the musicians and songwriters for their participation on this CD. Their stories as you'll see in the liner notes are as interesting as their songs. And we'd like to thank the cars that inspired them for breaking down, falling apart, limping along, and occasionally bursting into flames. They may not be good transportation, but they make good songwriting subjects.
