TALES OF THE BROTHERS GRIME

Tales of the Brothers Grime is Car Talk's latest collection of great stories from Car Talk! It's so new, in fact, that the paint is still drying on the CD covers. PRODUCER'S NOTES

Everyone makes mistakes. You may be thinking, right now, about the one you just made in buying this CD. But your mistakes probably don't get broadcast to millions of listeners. I wish I could say the same.

For Tom and Ray Magliozzi, the hosts of Car Talk, every mistake, every minor disaster, is fodder for the comedy mill. For example, there's my failed attempt to cross a small gully in a rented Buick. There's their friend Vito's attempt to heist stalactites from a famous underground tourist attraction. And there's a customer's insistence on a clutch so hard to depress, that one of his butt cheeks grew visibly larger than the other.

Endearingly, they laugh hardest at their own mistakes; eating an old lady's birthday cake, nearly getting court-martialed by the U.S. Army, applying a water-proofing agent where it never, ever should be applied.

So consider this collection of stories a primer on crisis management. There are few mistakes we commit that can't be diffused with a good, shared laugh. Someone tell the rental car agency.
