Tips for starting a similar program in your area

What if I want to start a program like the Good News Garage, in my town?

The folks at the Good News Garage point out that there's a lot to consider. For example...

Funding. About half of the funding for the Good News Garage comes from grants, contracts and donations. The rest comes from repairs to vehicles. The Good News Garage started with a grant of about $50,000... but that wasn't nearly enough. They estimate that $200,000 is needed to repair and distribute 60 to 70 cars in the first year.

Insurance. Every state has different liability insurance costs for drivers, and some can be fairly rigorous. Will your recipients be able to afford it, and if not, how will you help them?

A partner. What social service agency will you use, to accept referrals for vehicles?

And, of course...

How will you get the word out that you need donated vehicles?

The Good News Garage has a packet of information that they can send out, if you're interested in starting a garage in your town. The cost is $10, or $20, if you want their video. Just call the Good News Garage toll free at 877.448.3288 or you can e-mail them.
