On the Links: Tom and Ray on a Very Unusual Car Talk Test Drive

A few weeks ago, our Producer Dougie Berman told us to meet him one morning at Franklin Park Golf Course here in Our Fair City, to test some top-of-the-line vehicles. We could hardly contain our excitement. Meeting at a swank golf course? Our minds danced with images of Mercedes, Lexi and Jaguars.

You can imagine our disappointment, then, when we pulled into the golf course—and spotted Berman in front of a lineup of golf carts. Yea, that's right. As in, 12-volt batteries and go cart tires.

It seems Dougie had lined up a review of the 2000 model year carts, for Travel and Leisure Golf magazine. Thanks a lot, Dougie.

The truth is, we had a blast—and we're not golfers. In fact, the only time a Magliozzi has been allowed onto such high falutin' premises, was after hours—and then only to spray pesticide, tidy up the sand traps or pick up errant golf balls.

But, we got right in the swing of things. Our scorecard at the end of the day?

  • three carts with varying degrees of body damage
  • seven irate golfers chased us off the course, after we drove through the sprinklers in order to "test rain handling"
  • disturbed the peace on two separate occasions
  • met with officers of the law on one occasion.

Not bad, for a day's outing.

Why not join us in a tour of this momentous afternoon?
