Do you wake up in the middle of the night, suddenly seized by enormous pangs of guilt for all the noxious emissions you've contributed to the atmosphere with all your driving?

Neither do we.

But one could argue--from an ecological point of view--that the automobile is one of the lousiest things mankind has ever invented. Let's face it: No one thing has ruined more cities, killed more people, caused more pollution, and caused us to be more sedentary than the automobile. Just being responsible for strip malls should itself be enough to get the car on most fecal rosters. If it weren't for the lucrative career we've had fixing them, automobiles would have no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
